For a change, scientists aren't blaming global warming for the increase in number and intensity of storms. The new study blames sooty, sulphurous coal smoke from Asian industry -- largely in China and India -- for altering the eastbound "storm track" in the Pacific.

TORONTO -- One man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after whiteout conditions lead to a massive pileup of more than 75 vehicles on Ontario's Highway 400 north of Toronto. No other critical injuries were reported, police said. An unknown number of people were hurt Monday afternoon when dozens of cars, trucks and buses collided with one another n...

Marilyn Baker's Jan. 20 column about why she likes Big Pharma and doesn't understand why others despise them smacks of a person who has had a healthy existence and is currently able to sit in her ivory tower and pass judgment on the "little" people. Ignoring the facts of Big Pharma's true history and focusing only on the good makes her a prime candidate for a position within the industry. She mirrors its advertising tactic of trumpeting a product's miraculous properties while whispering side effects such as rectal bleeding or vomiting.

China has experienced pressing energy shortages in recent years, and Beijing has intensified its efforts to secure China's energy supply through both increased domestic production and external expansion. In this paper, I first analyze China's global quest for energy by looking at the correlation between China's economic growth and its energy security concerns. I then examine the implications of China's "go-out" strategy through two sets of case studies. I argue that China's global search for energy is primarily driven by its rapid economic growth, out of insecurity rather than a master plan to dominate the world, and that China's energy security issues have multiple implications beyond simple economic concerns. Finally, I recommend a forward-looking engagement policy to be adapted by Ca...
