  • Chapters are extremely well written and well formatted. Each chapter includes case studies, photos, general background such as the history, religion and economics of the country, and me ceremonies and customs of mate selection and couple formation. This parallel format allows readers to do some cross-cultural comparisons and to see how mate selection is either similar to or ditlerent from other ways, !here is also a good deal of discussion throughout tne chapters on how singletons, widows, widowers, and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered folks are perceived and treated. 1 here are also discussions of intergenerational differences in mate selection and couple formation, including how things were done several hundred or as little as forty years ago. Chapter authors also tend to disc...

  • Richard Gray told a daylong forum on the future of the wheat board in Winnipeg he's looking forward to the report of a task force charged with coming up with ways of implementing the Conservatives' goal of creating a dual market for Prairie wheat and barley. I strongly currently hold the view the wheat board has (a) positive effect on average producer incomes," he told the audience of farmers, academics, business persons and politicians. "Once farmers get cash prices, there is no going back (to the wheat board)," [Jim Pallister] said.

  • In Political Science one can observe various discourses to defining the essence of libertarianism, which are based on (Boaz, 1998) different philosophical approaches to the institutions of central political power (especially the state). Today, interpretations of right-libertarian ideological complex are most popular in the scientific literature and in the popular imagination. Yet, since the middle of 19th century - the concept of libertarianism had been used in a left political context, and only in 1950s its right ideological context use came into fashion. The authors consider the left libertarianism (libertarian socialism) as series of theoretical principles and the socio-political practices aimed at the liberation of both individuals and collectives of people from various kinds of opp...

  • Behind the joint ownership of financial resources is the couple's adherence to the values of family collectivism and relational harmony, and this is so even when the spouses may have kept some "other incomes" in their own pockets. "Whatever the choice [spending] we make, we do it for the best interest of the family" and "We are the family!" are among the common responses from the collectivized couples. A middle-aged businessman said of his wife with gratitude: "My wife is very family orientated. A few years ago, she received a scholarship for graduate studies from a university in the U.S. Worried that I would not be able to take care of myself and our , daughter, she gave up the opportunity.... She has sacrificed so much for our family." His wife (a government official), in a separate i...

  • The aim of this study was to examine similarities and differences in the pattern and extent of support among family members in five cultural groups in the Netherlands (Dutch mainstreamers, Turkish- , Moroccan-, Surinamese-, and Antillean-Dutch). Results revealed that the patterns of support were similar in all cultural groups: Provided support was larger than received support, parents provided and received more support than siblings, and emotional support was stronger than functional support. Using multigroup structural equation modeling, it was shown that the associations between family exchange, frequency of contact, and quality of relationship with parents and siblings were identical in all cultural groups. The cultural differences in mean scores were small for family exchange and qu...

  • Children constitute an important target market segment and merit attention from a marketing perspective. The role that children play in making decisions concerning the entire family unit has prompted researchers to direct attention to the study of influence of children. The amount of influence exerted by children varies by product category and stage of the decision making process. For some products, they are active initiators, information seekers, and buyers; whereas for other product categories, they influence purchases made by the parents. The purchasing act is governed by how they have been socialized to act as consumers. Family, peers, and media are key socializing agents for children wherein family-specific characteristics such as parental style, family's Sex Role Orientation (SRO)...

  • This paper examines how adolescents' values may be shaped by the immediate social context with special reference to social class and rural urban background. The locus of study is Taiwan, a society with drastically declining birth rates in recent years. It is hypothesized that the value adolescents place on having children (or the positive value) and not having children (or the negative value) are accounted for by individual, familial and social contextual factors. Data are taken from an island-wide sample of first-year senior high students. A field survey was administered from winter of 2005 to spring of 2006. The analysis shows that three dimensions can be extracted from both positive and negative values toward having children: with emotional value rated the most important, followed by...

  • Previous cross-cultural mate preference studies have employed researcher-generated lists of traits constructed from Western samples. Yet people from different cultures may prefer traits that do not appear on the lists. Unexamined, too, is the importance of relational communication characteristics and filial piety in partner preferences. To examine similarities and differences in mate preferences, two studies were conducted with 277 college students from China and the United States. In Study 1, responses from an open-ended question indicated that both groups listed honesty, physical attractiveness, ambitious and considerateness as preferred traits. Chinese students listed filial piety as one of their three most preferred traits in a partner. Study 2 explored the relative importance of st...

  • To set the stage more precisely, I will first discuss four major factors that affect students today: the values of Confucianism and collectivism, the impact of political policies on families over the last 50 years, the students' only child status, and China's shift from a state-run economy to a market-driven capitalist economy. I am guided theoretically by the argument that "all choices are socially shaped" and "patterned by social structure," as well as the assumption that social structure can be transformed at particular historical moments (Hays, 1994). I assume that society "constructs, organizes, and defines the life course," not in a deterministic sense, but by structurally constraining what appear to be possible choices for life trajectories (Buchmann, 1989; Motola, Sinisalo, &amp...

  • There is substantial research on the relationship between marital satisfaction and its effect on child development, with empirical evidence suggesting that marital conflict and dissatisfaction among the parents is predictive of poorer child outcomes. These findings are consistent with systems theory, which suggests that dynamics in one subsystem have an effect on other systems in the family. However, there is little known about how these variables apply to the Latino population. With Latinos now comprising the largest minority population, it is important to understand the effect of marital distress on child outcomes in Latino families. Data for the study come from a larger longitudinal study of 126 families living in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Each family had a child ranging in age from 3 to...
