The use of fist-sized rocks in lieu of grass, wood chips or pea gravel at commercial properties around the Wheat City is causing at least two local businesses grief. Under the City of Brandon's zoning bylaw, the use of rocks isn't prohibited by landscape design standards, but city engineer Ted Snure said it is discouraged, especially when the rocks are immediately adjacent to a sidewalk or right-of-way - otherwise known as the entire width of the street that includes the street's boulevard, sidewalk, bicycle paths, curbing and the street itself.
