Nevertheless, the prime minister labelled Parliament "dysfunctional" last week, maintained the committee system was "in chaos" and warned he would "have to make a judgment in the next little while" on whether it's worth going on.
[Joe Preston] unwillingly took the gavel, banged it down and adjourned the meeting. He refused to call another one and soon resigned. The government refused to nominate any chair other than Goodyear, the opposition wouldn't accept him, and the committee hasn't met since then.
In the government operations committee, also chaired by the opposition, MPs held a brief inquiry into allegations that one of [Stephen Harper]'s aides had intervened in a contract dispute between a Montreal firm and the Public Works Department. The committee also grilled Environment Minis...

[Karlheinz Schreiber] may win bail on his extradition problems, but if he lost his freedom by being in contempt of Parliament, I think that's a pretty effective deterrent and it's something the chair will have to consider if he refuses to co-operate.
"We're a parliamentary committee. We're not a commission of inquiry. We want to get his testimony, we don't do interrogations and we don't extort the information from a hostile or recalcitrant witness," she said.

The role of the Adjudicating Committee (AC) is to hear referred cases involving allegations of member MISCONDUCT, and to hear appeals to decisions taken by the Counsellor of Professional Practice. To this end, the AC arranges formal hearings that are held twice per year, generally in the spring and fall. As part of the process, the member is expected to cooperate fully with the Counsellor, typically through a verbal interview process and/or through written replies to the Counsellor's inquiry. Ultimately, it is the Counsellor who determines the outcome and, on consent, imposes the appropriate practice sanction where appropriate.

Although the Germans have waited for nine years to get their hands on Karlheinz Schreiber, Liberal Leader Stephane Dion says the businessman's Canadian corruption allegations are more important.
He's calling on the Tory government to suspend the extradition order against Schreiber until he's had a chance to testify to both a House of Commons committee and a public inquiry.
