Environmental damage costs the Chinese economy 10 per cent of the country's gross domestic product; China, thanks to carbon-emissions trading, is receiving billions of dollars to adopt clean development mechanisms; the Chinese people want an end to having to breathe in air that in Beijing is said to be the equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes a day.
