[Jesse Hamonic] and [Jess Sloss] were profiled recently in the Globe and Mail because they are starting their own charities. They were unimpressed by established non-government organizations that had rules and regulations for who could volunteer and what they could do. "The option of volunteering for a big organization and licking stamps all day is not that appealing," Sloss said. "We want to show what we can do.
Each successive major disaster offers the humanitarian aid community lessons in how we can improve our work," [Ray Offenheiser] said. But unless those lessons are implemented by aid groups, all the hard-won best practices "will be submerged in an ."
Sometimes "what a community needs differs quite greatly from my 'ideal' service," he wrote, adding that "alt...

An inquest report released Tuesday offers recommendations on how the province and federal government might improve a woefully inadequate jail and policing system in the turbulent community of Pauingassi First Nation after the October 2005 cell death of 23-year-old Darlene Rose Owens.
It is unclear whether CPR properly administered could have saved (Darlene) Owens. However, all band constables, night patrols, guards and other persons responsible for prisoner safety should have regular first aid and CPR training to ensure they are equipped to provide basic emergency care when required," said the report, which notes law enforcement officials in the community now receive first aid and CPR training before working.
The cell door Owens hung herself on had a loose door knob, according to inque...

It's been difficult. It's been frustrating," said Dr. Alicja Kuffel, a member of the Polish community that has rallied to aid the Mazurs.
Kuffel doesn't see why another family that's found sanctuary with Winnipeg church members shouldn't be given a break, too. Hassan Raza and his wife and six children have been living in Crescent Fort Rouge United Church since last August. They say it's not safe for them to return to Pakistan where they haven't lived for a decade.
"I don't see any reason why they shouldn't go to representative of the Conservative party." said Kuffel.

In the mid-1960s, Hodgson returned to school, completing a certificate in social work at the University of Regina. During her studies she completed a practicum at Moose Jaw Legal Aid. It was during this practicum that she realized the judicial system needed to be changed to eliminate bias against Aboriginal people. That became another avenue she pursued in her efforts to improve the lives of Aboriginal people.
Hodgson gave her time to a number of organizations, including the Angus Campbell Centre, a residential detox centre, and Moose Jaw Transition House, a shelter for women and children. Other organizations Hodgson was involved with included the Moose Jaw Aboriginal Women's Association, the Saskatchewan Mental Health Association, the Association for Community Living, the John Howard S...
