It's easy for the offender to go to jail because he doesn't have to meet the victim or the community," she said.
"The goal of this conference isn't to set up a separate justice system, but there are things that can be done now between justice and the aboriginal community. The aboriginal community should be involved.
Wendy Whitecloud, director of the aboriginal law program at the University of Manitoba, said she's hoping to get out of the conference "a sense of what the community is thinking and how to make the justice system more responsive to the aboriginal community."

Fort Garry Ladies Pony Club est. 1907 is looking to the Winnipeg community to help us fill in some gaps in our clubs local history. After a terrible fire in 1972 that took much of our archive we are hoping that former members of our long-standing social club will have squirreled away photo's, memorabilia, and/or any ephemera that might further elaborate on our club and its long and generous history here on the Manitoba prairie. We are working toward an exhibition that will coincide with the Manitoba Homecoming festivities next year. Send photo's etc. to: Peter Roy, 5th floor, 290 McDermot Ave., Wpg., MB, R3B 0T2.

To attract lawyers to underserviced communities, the Law Society of Manitoba and the University of Manitoba, with support from the Manitoba Bar Association, have created a program to provide free tuition and living costs to students from underserviced communities who wish to become lawyers. Many individuals from smaller, remote communities wish to practise law in their community, but they are not able to afford the cost of the education and living expenses in Winnipeg.
