Cheyenne Henry, North End community worker, has been working on various art projects with the William Whyte School's Spring Turtles Drum Group that ended with them painting a mural on the side of the Up Shoppe on Selkirk Avenue.
The drum group which ranges in age from nine to 13 includes: Mandy Thomas, Alanna Sinclair, Jolene Sinclair, Emma Beardy, Chelsea Kent, Erin Getty, Robin Rudolph, Brandy Richard, Cherise Kent, Meredith Kent, Faith Beardy and Samantha Chartrand.

The problem, of course, is to whom should these people be encouraged to report? A woman who claims to have been taken from a Winnipeg street, spirited to the edge of town and raped by a police officer is unlikely to go to police for help. One such accusation related to an alleged incident many years ago, another was not "that long ago" according to the woman who told her story to a community worker at a North End neighbourhood centre. It is less likely that reports of police brutality will be made if the victim lives in a community where fear of police is common, where residents believe they are targetted in crime sweeps, stopped and questioned because of the colour of their skin.

The Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg could be a very important tool for aboriginal people, especially since there's such an influx of families coming to the city," said Dilly Knol, executive director of the Andrews Street Family Centre. She ran in September's council election for a director's seat because she didn't feel the Aboriginal Council was representing many urban aboriginal people, including families the Andrews Street centre is trying to help in the North End. She's not alone.
