  • Two-way analysis of variance ( ANOVA) was carried out separately for the Canadian and Indian sample to test the influence of parenting style and gender on academic achievement and other family interaction variables. Results for the Canadian sample demonstrated significant effects of parenting style on parent concern for education (F^sub 3,1035^ = 93.75, p < .01; eta= 0.46), family discussion (F^sub 3,1030^ = 30.85. p < .01 : eta= 0.29), family cohesiveness (F^sub 3,1030^ X 31023 = 75.94. p < .01 ; eta= 0.43) and academic achievement (F3.1038= 27.12, p < .01 ; eta= 0.27). Post-hoc analyses via Tukey test (Tukey set at α =.05) showed that adolescents who characterized their parents as authoritative reported higher levels of parent concern, family discussion, family cohes...

  • This study examines the intergenerational relationships in an East Asian society, Taiwan. Types of relations from children's perspective are used to illustrate the dynamics between adult children and their parents. Due to the rapidly declining co-residence between generations, it is assumed that those who do not practice coresidence with parents will become the majority and thus, will become the focus of analysis. Data are taken from the 2006 Taiwan Social Change Survey (Phase 5 Wave 2). The sample is constituted by 756 adults with at least one parent alive but who are not co-residing at the time of the survey. The intergenerational solidarity model proposed by Bengtson is used as the theoretical framework. The analysis first presents the difference between the co-resident and the nonco...

  • Although the two aforementioned dimensions have been recovered widely in previous research, the relations between these two dimensions have tended to vary across samples, both within and between cultures (e.g., [Duckitt], 2001; [Duriez] et al., 2005). In some samples, the two dimensions are nearly independent, but in other samples the relations are much stronger. In an attempt to understand these variations, Duckitt and colleagues (Duckitt, 2001; Duckitt et al., 2002) and Duriez et al. (2005) have hypothesised that the strength of the relation between the two dimensions depends on the national political context and on the characteristics of the respondents. With regard to between-culture differences, Duckitt and colleagues suggested that the relations between the two dimensions are stro...

  • As a result of a rise in divorce rates coupled with an increased prevalence of cohabitation, a growing percentage of the population has experienced or will experience the breakdown of a relationship and also the possibility of forming another new relationship. This paper explores the impact of previous relationship and fertility histories on repartnering. Using a longitudinal approach we compare the nature of repartnering behaviour in the United Kingdom and Australia, countries with similar policy and legislative frameworks. Using prospective panels surveys (British Household Panel Survey and the Household, Income and Labour Dynamic in Australia), we find that within five years of becoming single, an estimated 49 per cent of the United Kingdom sample and 43 per cent of the Australian sa...

  • This paper provides further evidence on the value premium using Canadian data from 1985-2005 and a search process involving both price to earnings (P/E) and price to book value (P/BV) ratios. The study documents a consistently strong value premium over the sample period, which persisted in both bull and bear markets, as well as in recessions and recoveries. Moreover, the paper shows that a P/E based search process did a better job of identifying value stocks and arriving at more consistent and sizeable value premium than did a search process based on P/BVs.

  • This study investigates the reasons why adult children support their parents. In the current literature, four factors commonly appear in causal explanations of children's helping behaviors: intimacy, altruism obligation, and reciprocity. Yet, attempts to test the combined or relative explanatory power of these factors are rare, and the possibility that the causal relationships might change as children and parents age has not been considered. This study was designed to fill this gap. It is based on a sub-sample of 620 adult children of different age groups taken from the 2005/2006 pre-study of the German 'Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics'. The dependent variable of interest is the degree of material and instrumental support given to mothers and fathers. The mo...

  • This paper examines the relationship between board independence degree and managerial short-term incentives in investment decisions using a game-theoretical framework which is based on the model of Narayanan (1985). Because the model here connects corporate governance by a board and investment decisions by a manager, we can see clearly how the board affects the manager's investment decisions using its wage policy for the manager. According to the results here, although corporate governance by the board can alleviate managerial short-term incentives in investment decisions, it can not solve these kinds of biases completely. Therefore, to accomplish our final target of eliminating managerial short-term incentives in investment decisions, the only way we can do is to make the information b...

  • This paper examines how adolescents' values may be shaped by the immediate social context with special reference to social class and rural urban background. The locus of study is Taiwan, a society with drastically declining birth rates in recent years. It is hypothesized that the value adolescents place on having children (or the positive value) and not having children (or the negative value) are accounted for by individual, familial and social contextual factors. Data are taken from an island-wide sample of first-year senior high students. A field survey was administered from winter of 2005 to spring of 2006. The analysis shows that three dimensions can be extracted from both positive and negative values toward having children: with emotional value rated the most important, followed by...

  • This paper identifies two new tools, the Keirsey Temperament Sorter (KTS) and Derrida's deconstruction method, to identify cognitive differences between Australian, Thai, and Japanese managers. The KTS identifies one's temperament pattern, which describes ways in which human personalities interact with the environment to satisfy needs. Temperament theory has been extended to leadership/management theory to show that inborn temperament tendencies are differently distributed by cultural groups and these tendencies affect approaches to negotiations. Derrida's deconstruction method offers a new approach to identifying a culture's true diversity by recommending an analysis of the 'difference-to-oneself' within a culture before comparing 'difference-between' cultures. Results identified signi...
