Those comparing Toronto's rapid transit system with Winnipeg's lack of one are overlooking one crucial point: the Ontario capital's metropolitan area has at least five times our population. Without its subway lines it would have reached a state of gridlock long ago. Even matching Winnipeg against Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa is invalid because they are 50 per cent larger and growing faster. And despite the Alberta cities' light rail lines, recent surveys show their citizens depend exclusively on their vehicles more than any others in the country. In fact, the same survey revealed that nationally the percentage of people in this category has been edging upward from 68 per cent in 1992 to 74 per cent in 2007 regardless of all the urging of environmentalists to drive less. A big part of the G35's sure-footed feel is the P225/55R17 tires and the G's proactive all-wheel-drive system. Nail the gas and the central coupling locks, which splits the power evenly front to rear. By monitoring a number of sensors, including the throttle, it begins to work before the wheels spin, which makes the slip-first-grip-later systems seem primitive. Once up to speed, the system begins to relax the split, eventually driving the rear wheels alone, which helps fuel economy. Between the extremes, it shuttles power around on an as-needed basis and in a seamless manner. The EX35's exterior similarities to the G are there for all to see and the interior appointments are basically the same, up to and including the options list. In the rear, the EX35 has more versatility and cargo ca...

Slip behind the wheel and the good news is that the Elantra GLS Sport continues to impress. To begin with, this car is appreciably larger than its predecessor. Hyundai brags that the Elantra's interior volume (112.1 cubic feet of passenger volume and trunk space) betters the Acura TL's 110.4 cubic feet. The large, breezy, greenhouse certainly reinforces its notion of size. Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that features variable valve timing on the intake cam. The advantage, lower emissions aside, is that it promotes low-end response and mid-range punch. It also helps to spread the 138 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque over a broader range. That stated, you're not going to peel rubber from a standstill, at least not when the engine is married to the optional four-speed au...

The power is relayed to the road through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). I despise these things because of the manner in which they peg the engine at redline. Under hard acceleration, this brings a long, monotonous roar that stays until the driver reaches the desired speed or submits to the cacophony. The Rogue, however, has a saving grace -- there's a manual mode and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters that allow the driver to flick through the six ratios. The difference is that, with each upshift, the engine's note changes, which does away with the monotonous roar. It makes a big difference to the Rogue's on-road demeanour. Inside, the SL is nicely attired. The perforated leather seating is coloured red within the holes, which gives the black leather a classy-looking re...

We examined how encoding and retrieval processes were affected by manipulations of attention, and whether the degree of semantic relatedness between words in the memory and distracting task modulated these effects. We also considered age and bilingual status as mediating factors. Monolingual and bilingual younger and older adults studied a list of words from a single semantic category presented auditorily, and later free recalled them aloud. During either study or retrieval, participants concurrently performed a distracting task requiring size decisions to words from either the same or a different semantic category as the words in the memory task. The greatest disruptions of memory from divided attention (DA) were for encoding rather than retrieval. The effect of semantic relatedness wa...

Talk about claw-strophobia! Somehow, a Sheboygan, Wis., youngster manages to crawl inside a claw game located inside his local Piggly Wiggly. Mark Zittel, Sheboygan's fire chief, says he received an emergency call classified as "child in toy machine." Zittel says he expected to encounter a youth with one arm or leg stuck, "but here was a seven-year-old boy, sitting among the stuffed animals. When it comes to claw games, SpongeBob can't lose and Squidward can't win. Mr. Krabs almost ruins the latter's life after letting him try out his new "Skill Crane." In no time at all, Squidward becomes obsessed with winning even one measly bauble. In an episode of the NBC's The Office, Toby (Paul Lieberstein) attempts to work his way into Pam's (Jenna Fischer's) heart by winning her a toy duck s...
