  • An important operational aspect of international business is the coordination of widely dispersed resources of their networks of relationships with partners. Such interdependencies affect their ability to compete and/or create economic wealth. In order to examine the significance of network relationships in alliance capitalism and foreign direct investment (FDI), a network perspective as governance structure is used to examine the effects of resource interdependencies on relationship value. The article provides insights into alliance capitalism of interfirm relations for understanding implications for relationship value and increasing FDI between firms in industrial clusters of small and medium sized firms. On the basis that flows of local and foreign investment could be from internal o...

  • Adopting a governance perspective, this study analyzes the merger between closely-held Donohue Inc. and widely-held Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. Findings suggest that the absence of a controlling shareholder and weak board governance at Abitibi might explain both (a) its executives' interests in the transaction and (b) its CEO's compensation increase despite underperformance. Second, an intergeneration shift of control at Quebecor (Donohue's parent company) led to a strategic reorientation that (a) transformed Donohue into a target and (b) insured that Donohue's executives had incentives to pursue a deal. Finally, Donohue's noncontrolling shareholders benefited from the transaction while Abitibi shareholders experienced wealth reduction. The merger's aftermath provides some counter evidenc...

  • He tries to put a similar perspective on the debate over livestock production in Manitoba. The numbers don't tell the whole story, nor do they consider the host of political, economic and social factors. For example, the livestock sector in Manitoba is in a severe state of contraction right now due to economic and political issues. This is why Manitoba's hog industry got into trouble after the province originally decided to regulate manure spreading by nitrogen content. On that basis, farmers in the "hog alley" south and east of Winnipeg could apply all they want close to home. But at the same rate, phosphorus is being applied at double the amount that crops can use, leading to a buildup and excess runoff. Where there is concentrated cattle feeding, such as in Southern Alberta's "feedlo...

  • By a happy accident, this concentrated industrial activity in the regions where coal was readily available, and a potato-driven population boom provided ample workers for the new factories. Friedrich Engels even declared that the potato was the equal of iron for its "historically revolutionary role. The potato promoted free trade by contributing to the abolition of Britain's Corn Laws -- the cause that prompted the founding of The Economist in 1843. The Corn Laws restricted imports of grain into the United Kingdom in order to protect domestic wheat producers. Ultimately it was not the eloquence of the arguments against the Corn Laws that led to their abolition -- and more's the pity. It was the tragedy of the Irish potato famine of 1845, in which one million Irish perished when the pot...

  • There is a continuing debate about the extent to which women in the 19th century were involved in economic life. A sutdy utilizes a reading of a number of novels by the English author Anthony Trollope to explore the impact of primogeniture, entail, and the marriage settlement on the relationship between men and women and the extent to which women were involved in the ownership, transmission, and management of property in England in the mid-19th century. The marriage settlement, primogeniture, and entail play a crucial role in Trollope's plots, in the creation and transmission of family wealth. Although Trollope's treatment of them is ambivalent, they have negative as well as positive consequences. The portion and the settlement appear as indispensable elements of marriage, but with the ...
