'BUBBA'S blonde" -- the tabloid take on Bill Clinton's friendship with Belinda Stronach -- is back to full grind in the rumour mill. But this time, the gossipy talk about supposed sparks between the former U.S. president and the party-hopping billionaire Liberal MP has some venerable media outlets weighing the implications for the future leadership of the free world.
Democrats preparing for 2008 describe the political challenge this way: Mrs. Clinton could prosper as a presidential candidate, yet the return of 'the Clintons' could revive memories including the oft-derided two-for-the-price-of-one appeal of his 1992 presidential campaign, Mrs. Clinton's role in the universal health-care debacle, and the soap opera of infidelity," the Times reported. "Because of Mr. Clinton's behaviour i...

The Harper government claims that it is keen to develop a strong policy towards Latin America. Yet it is a flawed approach, supporting US policy at a time when it is at its lowest point in decades, while ignoring both a clear leftward swing of elected Latin American governments in the last five years and the significant importance of Cuba in the region. This paper examines the Harper government's approach to Cuba. Following some general comments on the evolution of Canadian policy towards revolutionary Cuba, it examines some of the errors in the Harper approach, suggests an explanation for the approach employed, and makes suggestions about policies that Ottawa should consider to improve relations. In sports terms, Cuba "punches above its weight"-a fact which is known widely in Latin Ame...

There is a certain irony in the fact that despite Harper's budget (which was intended to save [Charest] as Harper's ally-of-the moment), Quebec voters have elevated to government-in-waiting status a party which is even more sympathetic to Harper and less sympathetic to a Canada as we have known it. After all, why not? The windfalls of Harper's massive financial transfers to Quebec and his reflexive adoption of the word "nation" to describe the Québécois necessarily fuel the push to greater autonomy.
