This paper aims to examine the dynamic relationship between informal controls and formal control in the context of public sector outsourcing and explores whether informal controls have a role to play in public sector outsourcing and what implications this has for the role of trust and accountability of the public service. This paper uses two case studies to examine these questions and concludes that while it is necessary for formal controls to dominate the selection stages of outsourcing for accountability and transparency reasons, informal or looser controls can play an important role in the implementation of the outsourcing relationship.

Political risk analysis primarily receives attention for foreign direct investment (FDI) but only rarely for exporting. We examine how exporters and foreign direct investors evaluate the relative importance of political risk factors. We provide a rationale for exporters to evaluate political risk factors for FDI and for foreign direct investors to evaluate political risk factors for exporting. Survey data were collected from Canadian exporters and foreign direct investors and capture the distinctive nature of salient factors for exporting and FDI. We offer unique insights on the evolutionary character of political risk that are of practical value for both exporting and FDI.

China has become the driving engine for the world economy and presents many opportunities for foreign firms. Although much research effort has been devoted to studying strategic management in Chinese organisations, China is still one of the least studied countries. This paper takes a new approach - complexity view - to examining the strategic management in Chinese organisations. It aims to explain why Chinese managers behave differently to their Western counterparts. To do so, literature on the complexity studies is firstly reviewed and synthesised. This paper then examines how institutional and cultural settings and Chinese history influence the strategic management in Chinese organisations. Finally, several managerial implications based on the results of this paper are suggested.
