As part of a new program aimed at boosting recycling and cutting back on trash volumes, three Winnipeg-area landfills and Brandon's landfill will soon have to pay the province an extra $10 per tonne on trash. Most of the levy money will be channelled back to municipalities and cities for recycling and other green waste-handling programs.
Brandon plans to swallow the costs instead of passing them on, at least for now. "We're hoping to offset it with the amount of recycling we're capturing," said public works director Ian Broome.
[Brandon]'s commercial tipping fees are currently $10 per tonne higher than Winnipeg's, but after the fee increase July 1, Winnipeg will have the higher rates: about $1.50 more per tonne. Loads of less than half a tonne are free in Brandon for residential custome...

Now, Brodie says, "Those days are gone. Long gone." Just a few years ago, customers could get good money for their used equipment. Today, however, prices for new systems are so low that there is absolutely no profit in all, but the highest quality second-hand systems. As for scrap value, in the drive to build less expensive systems, manufacturers have successfully 'thinwalled' their products, substituting lower-quality plastics and metals wherever possible. Inevitably, one side effect has been to take most of the scrap value out of used equipment.
Of course, people and institutions can still legally throw their waste electronics out in the garbage (although many governments are considering banning the practice) or hand them on to scrap dealers, but Brodie points out the harm that that d...

Other personality characteristics may promote healthy and proenvironmental behaviour. For example, conscientiousness is associated with health behaviours such as safer driving habits, better diet, and exercise (Booth-Kewley & Vickers, 1994). More conscientious, open, and future-thinking people report more proenvironmental attitudes and behaviour (Ebreo & Vining, 2001; Lindsay & Strathman, 1997; Nisbet, Zelenski, & Murphy, in press), and individual differences in connectedness to the environment predict ecological attitudes and behaviour (Mayer & Frantz, 2004; [Elizabeth K. L. Nisbet] et al., in press; see Armitage & Conner, 2000; Rosen, 2000, for health behaviour reviews; see Bamberg & Moser, 2007, for a review of environmental behaviour).
