Heat 375 ml (1 1/2 cups) of milk in the top part of a double boiler. Add sugar. Combine corn starch with the remainder of milk. Stir until smooth, add to heated mixture and stir until mixture thickens. Add salt, butter, vanilla and the beaten egg yolks. Cook two minutes longer, remove from heat, cool slightly, then turn into the baked graham wafer crust. Beat egg whites until they stand in peaks, add salt, vanilla and sugar. Mix well and spread over filling. Garnish with the remaining 60 ml (1/4 cup) of graham wafer crumbs and brown in a slow oven. Cool and serve.
Taste Tester Notes: This is a simple, old-fashioned custard pie. The original box states that approximately 36 wafers equals 500 ml (2 cups) crumbs. Some later versions of the recipe call for 310 ml (1 1/4 cups) of crumbs, and...

Turning the clock back to the 1980s, both Ford and General Motors tried their hand at sporty, economical two-seat cars, namely the Ford EXP, Mercury LN7 and the Pontiac [Fiero]. While the EXP and LN7 fell far short on styling and power, the Fiero emerged as a technological winner. Based on an entirely new platform, the Fiero housed mid-engine power, four-wheel independent suspension and industry-first composite body panels. The "Enduraflex" corrosion- and dent-resistant panels were made of urethane and were mounted directly to the Fiero's high-strength steel space frame. Built from 1984 to 1988, the Fiero was one of the boldest undertakings Pontiac had embarked on since the 1964 GTO. The two-seater would not only be a sales success, but it held Pontiac in the performance loop in a decad...

My first thought was, 'What are people going to think about nuns and monks making cream for your face?'" Sister Nancy Connors said. "But it's a good product. I use it every day and I believe it will help people.
While researching how the heart ages, [James Dobson Jr.] and colleague Michael Ethier discovered several years ago that adenosine -- a natural substance that's plentiful in older hearts -- triggers the skin's dermis to produce more elastin and collagen. Though that discovery was irrelevant in their cardiovascular studies, they recognized its potential value in skin-care products and patented the technology.
Dobson's wife, Susan, was the link between the monastery and the moisturizer. She first met Brother [Dennis Wyrzykowski] when she contacted his monastery's prayer line, lea...

It is decidedly better for you than cream cheese. A tablespoon of cream cheese has 50 calories and five grams of fat. The same amount of yogurt cheese (made from non-fat yogurt) has just 11 calories and no fat.
To make yogurt cheese, select a non-fat or low-fat yogurt that doesn't contain any gelatin, starch or gums. These thickeners can prevent the liquid from draining out of the yogurt.
Softer, flavoured yogurt cheeses can be used to make low-fat dessert toppings. In this recipe, drained vanilla yogurt is combined with a small amount of freshly whipped cream and almond flavouring to make an exquisite topping for fresh strawberries. You can prepare the vanilla-almond cream up to two days ahead and store it, covered, in the refrigerator.

You can personalize the (dessert) experience," she says. Buying your favourite star's ice cream is a way of saying "this is who I am and I'm reinforcing my identity with what I'm eating.
Since Ben & Jerry's introduced [Stephen Colbert]'s AmeriCone Dream in early March, for example, the ice cream has earned nearly 90,000 Google hits, been name-dropped numerous times on Colbert's hit show, and made headlines in media outlets as diverse as Rolling Stone and Access Hollywood.
Ben & Jerry's got even more publicity when they unveiled [Willie Nelson]'s Country Peach Cobbler and Colbert promptly declared war on the rival celebrity's dessert, jokingly sniping that Nelson's ice cream was made from "shredded tax forms and hash."

What's the latest eco-friendly product? It's not a new discovery to run your car or get rid of your garbage. Rather, it's a skin cream that contains green tea extract.
The way our skin ages depends on several factors. The most controllable factor is "photo-aging." Excessive exposure to sun results in rough, wrinkled skin. The clock also plays a role in skin aging. That's why everyone's antenna lights up when I write about this subject.
The earlier in life you get started on protecting skin the better. Unfortunately, the aging of skin starts in our 20s when reduced collagen production causes thinning of skin and fine wrinkles. This along with decreased concentration of glycoaminoglycans results in dry skin and slower removal of dead cells. There's also less spring-back due to a loss of e...

QUESTION: Now, here's a situation you might not have heard of before. I wear rubber gloves for doing dishes. Over the years I have accumulated dozens of gloves for the right hand and thrown away dozens of gloves for the left hand. I'm left-handed and find it's that hand that gets the pokes and holes from knives and other sharp items while dishwashing. I've tried to think of how I can repair the small hole in the rubber glove, to no avail. Can't bring myself to discard the right-hand gloves! What ideas do you have to remedy this situation?
ANSWER: Although there is no effective way to fix torn rubber gloves, if you always wear out one rubber glove, start saving all the good gloves and by turning half of them inside out you will gain a few extra pairs. Or cut good fingertips off one pair ...
