Canola is an expensive crop to grow. Seed costs alone are nearly double those of wheat. Due to proprietary rights and hybridization in canola, farmers don't have the option of cleaning up some of last year's crop for this year's seed like they can for most wheat varieties. Manitoba government estimates of crop production costs show canola requires about $295 per acre.
