The paper outlines developments in the accounting history literature during the 1990s. The introduction chronicles the immense broadening of publication opportunities in accounting history that characterized the decade. To a certain extent, this enhancement of outlets resulted from a richer dialogue among accounting historians who became increasingly willing to debate paradigmatic and methodological issues. In this context, the paper identifies and discusses traditional and critical forms of accounting history and reviews work within the paradigms of economic-rationalist, Foucauldian, and Marxist/labor-process studies. The major elements of debate between old and new perspectives on accounting history are discussed and linked to later collaborative efforts and refinements in the work of...

In 1913, Winnipeg Police became the first in North America to have telephone boxes on various corners from which foot patrols could call for help. The foot patrols were also required to call in every hour to let headquarters know they were safe. If a foot patrol didn't call, a red light would start flashing on top of the telephone pole to let the officer know to call. If he'd fallen asleep somewhere and didn't call in, he would be docked a day's pay.
Ida Cates was the first female operator in Winnipeg in 1882. When Ida married in 1885, MTS had to let her go. It was company policy. "It was a social thing. When ladies married, you were expected to stay at home and look after the children," said Harry Mortimer, a former MTS employee and the undisputed authority on local telephone history....

Recent statistics show Western Canada's wheat acreage this year is down 10 per cent from last year to its lowest level in 37 years. There are those who claim wheat acreage is dropping due to constraints on farmers' ability to market it because of the Canadian Wheat Board export monopoly. But wheat acreage has also been trending down in the United States. The North American Millers' Association told the U.S. government earlier this year wheat acres in that country has dropped 24 per cent in the last 10 years. There's no wheat board to blame there.
If a company "modifies" wheat to make it easier to grow, it wants to be paid for its efforts through seed sales. Wheat can't be so easily controlled. Farmers routinely save their own seed for next year's crop -- which was the sticking point in ...
