Parents and their adolescent children tend to disagree about children's responsibilities in the family, particularly when it comes to caring for parents and household chores. We explored whether this disagreement is similar in three ethnic groups or whether it depends on ethnic background and acculturation. More particularly we investigated: (a) how adolescents and parents perceive family obligations and to what extent their perceptions differ, (b) to what extent family obligations are shaped by ethnic background and acculturation experiences, and (c) to what extent intergenerational discrepancies in family obligations are linked to adolescents' well-being (i.e., self-esteem, life satisfaction, psychological problems, and behavioral problems). There was much else that we experienced -- the island resort community of Cheung Chau, with its narrow streets, lively outdoor market and old traditions; the seaside town of Sai Kung (on the Sai Kung Peninsula) with its promenade featuring outstanding and inexpensive awning-covered seafood restaurants overlooking the boat-crowded harbour; the 34-hectare Lions Nature Education Centre near Sai Kung with its meticulously maintained outdoor and indoor facilites; the Hong Museum of History, where in the section on the Japanese Occupation we came upon the medals of Sargeant L.P. While considerable attention has been paid to country differences in gender-role attitudes associated with women's-especially married women's-employment at the individual and societal levels, the industrialization hypothesis used in the previous studies has, however, yielded inconsistent results (Haller and Hoellinger 1994; Alwin, Braun, and Scott 1992; Baxter and Kane 1995; Crompton and Harris 1997; Hsieh and Burgess 1994; Panayotova and Brayfield 1997; Scott and Duncombe 1992). Furthermore, in order to measure a single concept or attitude, unidimensional scale development and factor analysis have been used to construct gender-role attitudes by assigning interval scores to ordinal response categories. The impact of personal income on gender egalitarianism, however, is unclear, with s...

Friendship is a frequently-used word but it is difficult to define it clearly. Friendship in its various configurations links people and communities together in some sort of reciprocally beneficial association that forms societies. Thus friendship is a concept that deserves attention. This paper examines some of the similarities and differences about understandings of friendship which both support and challenge traditional western perspectives. The article argues that an exploration of the experiences and interpretations of friendship outside the western philosophical tradition demonstrates a shared understanding about many aspects, but also some subtle differences which, while challenging some of the western concepts, can also be incorporated into developments of the idea of friendship.
