  • Interactions such as these may be quite stressful for the parent, contributing to small behavioral changes that add up to a decline in the quality of parenting (Ambert 2001).\n Thus, it is unlikely that regional and income differences between the samples account for the ethnic differences that we found regarding the association between childhood obesity and parental behavior. Given the high levels of attention accorded to obesity and widely publicized statements about an "obesity epidemic," it is possible that the gap between African American and European American parents has narrowed over time because recent public discussion has increased the salience of the issue among African American parents.

  • Focus groups have been used to improve services in a variety of arenas. In educational settings, they have been used in improving classroom teachers' performance, in general professional development, and in addressing areas of concern in the school setting. This research explores the effectiveness of focus groups in a school library media setting to improve library services to users, with particular emphasis on prioritizing concerns and generating solutions. Recommendations of the focus groups were compared with recommendations from the school librarian based on analysis of the data. As a result, a combined action plan was developed for guiding the future practices of the school library.

  • Program evaluation - One reason why program managers ask for a program evaluation is cultural - it relates to the world they live in. Many program managers have received training in program evaluation and performance measurement either in their post-graduate degrees (MPA for example) or elsewhere. Program evaluation is frequently discussed in government circles and their program's "marching orders" or enabling documents often refer to the need for program evaluation as an accountability measure. * Analysis of the program's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats ("SWOT") for each of seven business areas - strategy, finance, HR, IT, program operations (service delivery), marketing (program "reach") and innovation. • The American Association of School Librarians' Standards for the 21st Century Learner make clear that information skills alone are not sufficient for student success; students must also value those skills, use them in a productive and responsible manner, and have the motivational "dispositions in action" to support successful research and independent lifelong learning. Self-determination theory highlights perceived competence and autonomy as two basic psychological needs that support intrinsically-motivated behavior. This study investigates the extent to which context factors inherent to the school library influence students' perceived competence in the domain of information skills (PCIS), and their intrinsic motivation for research (IMR). The study explores this relationship among 1272...

  • Materials used by businesses for both production (direct) and accompanying administrative or operational (indirect) activities can be purchased via both offline and also online methods, such as electronic marketplaces (e-Marketplaces). Our paper examines the performance of such online e-Marketplaces under different types of governance structure (market or relational) and over time. This examination allows us to understand better the dynamic relationship between governance and purchasing performance. This provides important results for management in a variety of locations and over different times and stages of operations.

  • We use recent time diary data for the U.S. and Australia to examine the gender gap in total work time (unpaid work plus paid work). We focus on whether the gender gap in total work time varies by couples' employment and parental status. We use two alternative measures of unpaid work, which differ in whether unpaid work includes work reported as a secondary activity. Contrasting sharply with the image painted by Hochschild (1989), when we combine all types of families, we find little gender gap in total work hours (paid plus unpaid), whether or not secondary activities are included. However, the gender gap varies dramatically by family type. When couples have preschool-age children and both men and women are employed full-time, women's total work is 4 to 5 hours more per week than men's ...
