[John A. Macdonald] was born in 1815 in Glasgow. Along with his parents and family, he emigrated to Kingston in Upper Canada in 1820. [Patricia Phenix] unearths Macdonald's little-known personal traumas, including his seeing his five year-old brother's death at the hands of a drunken child-care worker, coping with a wife (his first) who was a bed-ridden opium addict and losing his first-born son to illness. Compounding all of this was Macdonald's well-known problem with alcohol. In the note, the woman related the tragic story of her grandson's death and the sadness it brought to her family.
