[John A. Macdonald] was born in 1815 in Glasgow. Along with his parents and family, he emigrated to Kingston in Upper Canada in 1820. [Patricia Phenix] unearths Macdonald's little-known personal traumas, including his seeing his five year-old brother's death at the hands of a drunken child-care worker, coping with a wife (his first) who was a bed-ridden opium addict and losing his first-born son to illness.
Compounding all of this was Macdonald's well-known problem with alcohol. According to historian Donald Creighton in his own two-volume biography, Macdonald was typical of a disappearing breed of "two-bottle politicians.
In his later years, he was a police magistrate for Winnipeg. Phenix mentions [Hugh]'s problems with alcohol following the death of his own son but neglects to note t...

It's alleged the failure to properly document the smell of alcohol on [Derek Harvey-Zenk] and other signs of impairment eliminated the opportunity to prosecute Harvey-Zenk for impaired driving causing death. It also contributed to a later controversial plea bargain in which Harvey-Zenk received a two-year conditional sentence -- house arrest -- for dangerous driving causing death.
[Jason Woychuk] only came clean about [Harry Bakema]'s role in his note-taking when he told current East St. Paul Police Chief Norm Carter about it, claiming he believed Bakema and another officer were "chicken----" in that they didn't want to see Harvey-Zenk prosecuted for impaired driving because he was a Winnipeg police officer.
That delay in reading Harvey-Zenk his rights would also weaken a police deman...

In the note, the woman related the tragic story of her grandson's death and the sadness it brought to her family. Not long after the young man's passing she began to feel his presence in the room with her and occasionally even heard his voice. At first she was afraid to talk about the encounters with her daughter (the mother of the deceased) but eventually she broached the subject and found out they both had experienced similar visits from the ghost of the young man.
I don't watch Ghost Whisperer or Medium, nor have I ever mentioned these TV shows in a column. (I did once go to a friend's house where we paid a medium $50 bucks to make contact with our dead relatives. She didn't have any luck finding anyone who wanted to talk to me, though.)
I called up Greg Stefanyshyn, who runs All Abo...

I said, 'farewell,' and then I left," [Roger Kusch] said. He also showed clips of the tape in which [Bettina Schardt] confirmed that she was ending her life of her own free will.
In a farewell note addressed to Kusch, Schardt assured him that she planned her own death "smilingly and systematically.
"Should the manner of my death help you in your fight, my life goal -- the freedom to die in dignity -- will be achieved," Schardt wrote.
