Canadian definitions of learning disabilities (LD) traditionally have varied interprovincially, and the authors have compiled current provincial and territorial policy information related to LD. Special education definitions of LD are summarized, and an overview of funding mechanisms for special education services for students with LD is provided. In the majority of provincial and territorial policies, the concept of LD as a discrepancy between intelligence test scores and achievement has been retained from previous policies as a defining feature. Seven provinces have adopted either the official version or part of the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada (2002) LD definition, which characterises LD as a cognitive processing disorder or condition with processing deficits. The use ...
Marketing research is increasingly interested in people's perception- and affect-laden, identity-involving relationships to companies and their brands. However, little attention has been paid to (1) how, specifically, such identity relationships to companies will stem from identity relationships to various other things that are relevant to people and associated with companies. Besides, (2) the influences of such relationships to companies on various business-relevant behaviors of the individuals, let alone organizations which the individuals may represent, have not been examined in a comprehensive way. This article addresses the identified research gaps by presenting an integrative framework that introduces a special kind of identity relationship, termed affective self-affinity (ASA). ...
Daphne Odjig, who spent an important early period of her career in Winnipeg, deserves a big share of the credit for changing this perception, along with her contemporaries in what's known as the Indian Group of Seven. Following the lead of Norval Morriseau, the group turned sacred native pictograms and myths into "high" art, becoming one of Canada's leading modern art movements in the process. John W. Graham put it this way, in a review in the Winnipeg Free Press in 1968: "Daphne Odjig works alone, without the support of stylistic heritage." While that may be overstating the case a little, it's not unreasonable to say that, using the "stylistic heritage" of several different cultures, she helped develop a completely new style of art. In both these works, her unfailing belief in the powe...
The report said the lack of comparable Canada-wide wait-time data is a "serious problem" that makes it difficult to assess progress in the 10-year federal-provincial health accord of 2004, which promised meaningful reductions in wait times in five priority areas by March 31, 2007. It is akin to flying a plane without instrumentation," the report said. "We see few attempts to rectify this situation and we remain very troubled by this. Canadians expect and deserve better. A related example is in cardiac care, where a success story of reduced wait times for bypass surgery masked a "troubling reality" of wait times for determining whether the surgery is necessary and for other forms of cardiac care.
At the same time as her photographs encompass a Surrealist vision by drawing on unconscious experience, they deviate from it by depicting the female body as not essentially beautiful and feminine. Cahun's images reveal an unconscious experience where the conventional performativity of gender is contested. In contrast, Surrealist images for the most part, confirm cultural notions of "female." This can be seen in photographs by Man Ray such as Lee Miller (1929), where a focus is placed on Miller's neck and, as a result, the female form appears phallic. Yet, at the same time, Man Ray's image is grounded in the very traditions of exhibiting the female-feminine body as a beautiful object. He depicts the female body as smooth, flowing and passive - all marks of the feminine beautiful. As evid...

Teenage girls represent the most highly sought after market segment in the U.S. because of their keen interest in shopping and their significant spending power. Teenage girls spend more time than teenage boys in shopping environments and outspend boys in every category except videogames. So, teenage girls clearly love to shop--but do they perceive themselves as good shoppers or is this a group who feels out of control when it comes to spending wisely and making considered decisions regarding purchases? If they lack the expertise and self-control to perform shopping tasks successfully, then there are numerous financial and psychological implications, including accumulating debt and exhibiting compulsive shopping behaviors that continue into adulthood. In order to examine teenage girls in...
