  • Zhou Long's Song of the Ch'in emulates the zither-like ch'in in some highly evocative writing, the gentle pentatonic scale anchoring a lovely display of effects and narrative. Chou Wen-chung (b 1923), whose fusion of East/West elements has been a lifelong study, is the senior composer here. Two of his pieces ask and answer in compelling fashion.

  • The central feature to the new-look Cam Clark is a new central entrance. (The two side entrances are still where they were.) "We had a rounded roof before," [Nick Davis] says. "Now we have a classy, more contemporary look. We are calling this our Fusion R model," Davis says. He points out the tinted windows on the vehicle as well as 18-inch aluminum wheels, low-profile sport tires, a spoiler on the back and chrome-tipped dual exhaust. [Gil DeGuzman] says he was attracted to Gauthier by the prospect of selling General Motors products. "GM's products have become competitive in both price and quality with imports," he says.

  • The Hybrid marriage of AC kilowatts and Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder horsepower provides a net result of 155 ponies, with CVT shifts. When I first drove the previous Escape Hybrid, I was most impressed with the transitions between gas and electric operation. The Hybrid engineering team has revised the transition software to new levels. How good is it? Let me put it this way; it's the only time in your life that the words 'you won't feel a thing' are actually true. There's always some weirdness; like Piano Black accents on the front door window switch trim of the top-end Limited, and none for the rear passengers. (Let's hope it's a pre-production oops.) Ice Blue lighting is standard, which should provide less retina-carving during moonlight drives. We're not entirely sure what '100 per ...

  • Recent studies of publication patterns in accounting history portray a myopic and introspective discipline. Analyses reveal the production and dissemination of accounting history knowledge which focus predominantly on Anglo-American settings and the age of modernity. Limited opportunities exist for contributions from scholars working in languages other than English. Many of the practitioners of accounting history are also shown to be substantially disconnected from the wider community of historians. It is argued in the current paper that interdisciplinary history has the potential to enhance theoretical and methodological creativity and greater inclusivity in the accounting history academy. A practical requirement for this venture is the identification of points of connectedness between...

  • So it's great that after the success of 2005's Plans, the Seattle quartet is not content to be just another Garden State-soundtrack wannabe. The band has stepped up its game on its sixth album and second major-label release; there's no shortage of pleasant pop here, but it's mordant and spiky, with lyrics that dwell on the dark side. Not only do the songs have gumption, they head out in unusual directions, incorporating Indian-style percussion, Kraut-rock artiness and New Wave keyboards, with Chris Walla's zig-zagging guitars sometimes entering Built to Spill territory. There are still some shmaltzy elements, but the melodies are so enticing that every song sounds warmly familiar after one listen, and they still manage to surprise after several spins. It's nice to know that the best-la...

  • At first blush, Ford's new mid-size sedan shouldn't generate the type of anticipation it did with me before I drove it. But this car is important for two reasons: first, it is Ford's first serious attempt at a competitive mid-size sedan in more than a decade. Second, it shares its underpinnings with a car that happens to occupy a space in my own garage, the Mazda6. Ford has successfully incorporated character and originality in the Fusion's styling. It's instantly identifiable but at the same time doesn't stand out -- a virtue in the eyes of typically conservative sedan buyers. Although not quite as sleek in its proportions, the Fusion's front three-quarter view resembles a slightly edgier version of the Infiniti G35 with its vertically stacked lights and chrome slats on the grille. • FOOD: If you've never tried wiener schnitzel, a breaded, tender pork cutlet, now's your chance. It's delicious in a combo plate for $10 or on its own for $4. Also available are the bockwurst dinner ($9) and alpine gulasch ($8). For a snack, try a salted chewy Bavarian pretzel, served with mustard for dipping (75¢). CULTURAL HIGH POINT: You'll be impressed by the dancers' quick and lively footwork during the traditional tinikling dance. CULTURAL HIGH POINT: Winnipeg's own Polish dance ensemble, ISKRY, will have you tapping your feet in no time. Home just in time for Folklorama from an international dance competition in Poland, ISKRY is sure to impress you with their fun and vibrant dance numbers.

  • All kidding aside, I was genuinely excited when we touched the tarmac at Quebec City's Jean Lesage International Airport. I'm half a Frenchman, and this was my first trip to the homeland. I'd also never driven a hybrid. In fact, prior to this journey, my only experience with electric vehicles was golf carts on prairie links. On the highway at 100 km/h, the gasoline engine is quiet and smooth, with ample power that moves the car with little effort. [Wade Ozeroff] suggested that rather than try and win the Hybrid Challenge we drive the Fusion like we would any other car, and that's exactly what we did. We didn't win, but we did manage to use only 6.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometers. The guys who won made the same trip as us and used only 5.3 liters per 100 km. The Ford literature boasts...
