  • Using content analyses, this study examines whether board structure of small listed companies influence their shareholders' wealth. This study focuses on three elements of board structure, namely, board size, board composition and directors' remuneration to examine the relationship between board structure and shareholders' wealth. Shareholders' wealth is measured by the return on investment and earnings per share. The results show that out of the three elements of board structure, board size and board composition play an important role in influencing shareholders' wealth in small listed companies. The results support the findings in earlier studies that large number of directors and the proportion of executive directors in a board would instil better decision-making policy. The results ...

  • In recognition of the growing importance of small business ownership by women to the economic well-being of national economies, considerable academic attention has been given to identifying the reasons why women enter self-employment. However, little is known about the motivations for women to become franchisors. This represents an important gap in the literature. While the absence of research may be due to early beliefs that women are risk averse individuals that tend to limit the growth of their enterprises, more recent studies conclude that women perceive small business ownership as a vehicle for rapid growth and wealth creation. On this basis, franchising should represent an appealing business expansion strategy as it minimizes capital, labor, and managerial limitations on firm grow...

  • An important operational aspect of international business is the coordination of widely dispersed resources of their networks of relationships with partners. Such interdependencies affect their ability to compete and/or create economic wealth. In order to examine the significance of network relationships in alliance capitalism and foreign direct investment (FDI), a network perspective as governance structure is used to examine the effects of resource interdependencies on relationship value. The article provides insights into alliance capitalism of interfirm relations for understanding implications for relationship value and increasing FDI between firms in industrial clusters of small and medium sized firms. On the basis that flows of local and foreign investment could be from internal o...

  • Burchell et al's [1985] historical analysis of value added in the UK attributes its rise and fall to societal circumstances which initially encouraged the voluntary disclosure of the Value Added Statement (VAS) by companies and then, following societal change, influenced its disappearance. This paper supplements Burchell et al's thesis by arguing that a fuller explanation for the disappearance of the VAS can be found by also considering the contents of the statement itself. An empirical study of the information in the VASs of UK companies shows that they were unlikely to give support to the economic interests of the employee user group who had been promoted as an important beneficiary of the VAS. The study demonstrates that the social and economic nature of accounting means that change ...

  • Market expansion is a very important strategic option in the developing economies. Literature on marketing to the "bottom of the pyramid" and the "blue ocean" strategy has brought to the fore the issue of direct involvement of manufacturers or corporations in expanding markets. Though the "bottom of the pyramid" and the "blue ocean" strategy frameworks are important references for development of conceptual framework for market expansion, neither of these can be considered as a complete conceptualization in itself. The authors synthesize extant knowledge on the subject and provide a conceptual framework by looking into fundamental issues such as what is a market, what is market expansion, and what factors affect market expansion. Unlike in case of the "blue ocean" strategy framework, th...

  • Families are the safety nets for society. They handle whatever problem there is no program or organizational response to solve in the larger society. Normative arrangements for exchange and transfer that have served families well for many generations are under considerable strain as demographic, medical and economic change has increased the length of time generations care for each other, the severity of problems that people are surviving while continuing to need care, and the complexity of making long term plans in a globalization setting. This review and analysis will look cross culturally at both traditional arrangements and new expectations and strategies. The cases as seen in several contemporary societies, of grandparents caring for grandchildren will be highlighted in terms of res...
