The extent of the problem of abuse against men is poorly defined. Statistics Canada has historically charted alarming levels of domestic violence against men and women, far outstripping the number of charges Winnipeg police lay in such incidents. Stats Can records six per cent of men surveyed in domestic relationships experienced violence in the last five years. In Winnipeg, those numbers would involve more than 8,000 men. Winnipeg police statistics record 14 per cent of domestic violence cases, or 304 charges, involved men as victims in 2008. Those numbers, however, rarely break into the light of day.
Mr. [Gord Mackintosh] has put $175,000 into making people aware of the effects domestic violence has on children, and into counselling programs for kids. Though no statistics are readily available in Canada regarding the rate of officer-involved domestic violence, studies presented by the National Centre for Women in Policing (NCWP) in the U.S. show that at least 40 per cent of police-officer families experience it. Victims reportedly often feel conflicted about calling 911 because they know the case will likely be handled by colleagues of the alleged abuser, who may even side with the officer, the NCWP said. Options such as calling the police for intervention, taking refuge in a shelter or seeking protection orders may not seem possible," Dr. Elisabeth Blaney wrote in a 2007 article for the International Association of Women Police.
