My brain is hurting! We don't have enough technologists and as a result, there are waiting lists of 17 weeks for an ultrasound in our hospitals. We put two ultrasound technologists out of business and force them to offer their tests just 100 kilometres away for only $129. What's even more puzzling is that the tests they provide could save us millions of dollars in health-care costs if people have their stroke risks identified and treated before the stroke hits them.
WRHA spokeswoman Heidi Graham says "10 ultrasound technologists are graduating from a training program at Health Sciences Centre this summer, and will likely help reduce some of the strain." Can Graham confirm how many of the 10 ultrasound technologists graduating will remain in Winnipeg, or Manitoba, or Canada for that mat...

Already, bans on organ commerce are crumbling. Indians who lost their livelihood in the tsunami of 2004 sold their kidneys, ignoring the law. Bulgaria imposes stiff sentences on organ traders, but that didn't deter a local hospital from serving Israeli transplant tourists last year. Nor did China's ban stop a Chinese hospital from offering a liver to a BBC correspondent. Three weeks ago a Korean newspaper reported that China's organ crackdown had simply raised the price of a Chinese kidney in South Korea.
Studies reviewed at the meetings in Europe show that flooding the market with purchased organs reduces the incentive to donate. The key to reversing the organ market is to turn that equation on its head. Stop fighting capitalism and start using it. What's driving the market is scarcity...

In the mere seconds that it takes to sign that little, blue organ donor card you've traditionally received with your driver's licence and likely tossed in the garbage without a thought, you can save the lives of as many as 10 people, says the organizer of small musical event held yesterday on the grounds of Brandon's Keystone Centre to raise awareness of organ transplant donation. [...] even though Cindy Hawkins' husband, Matthew, lost his battle with esophageal cancer after receiving a kidney transplant from his mother three years ago, she says she attended yesterday's celebration because the donation improved the final years of her husband's life.

Those engaged in fear-mongering have been hard at work again, trying to convince Canadians that our food supply is running short and prices are skyrocketing. Bread rising 10 per cent could hardly be called a crisis, let alone an event worth newsprint. Canadians are among the world's most fortunate when it comes to the portion of household income spent on food. I find it amusing to read that restauranteurs and grocers are "suffering" and being "forced" to pass rising costs on to consumers.
Let me ask you, when was the last time a farmer had the opportunity to pass on rising costs? Farmers get paid market price, and consumers need to learn that they have to pay market price. The fact that food prices are rising doesn't come as any surprise; with consumers demanding organically grown food...

"My room is just down the hallway and I heard my mom on the phone with 911. She usually would wake me up to tell me what's happening because my room faces the front of my house and I would wake up to see the ambulance lights. So she would always wake me up to tell me everything was OK. But this time she didn't. "I ran down the hallway and passed her and went into the washroom and found my dad on the floor in shock, with his eyes open and body lifeless. He was kept in the hospital after that. Around two weeks after that night, he went into a coma.

Serving breakfast has helped cole Robert H. Smith School students donate $5,000 to the local Children's Wish Foundation. The students recently held a fundraising community breakfast with the help of the Original Pancake House, which provided supplies and cooks, and the Grant Park Mall Safeway. A fundraising concert is being held for the Winnipeg paraplegic woman whose wheelchair van was stolen last year. Juno-award winning musician Steve Bell is donating all proceeds from his April 18 concert to raise funds to buy a security alarm for the garage where Judy Ford parks her wheelchair van and for a new wheelchair.
