Manitoba Conservation launched a health risk assessment in Flin Flon after an initial soil study in 2007 found high levels of arsenic, lead and mercury in many of the areas tested. While the current assessment is measuring toxic metals found in local vegetables, snow, dust in the home, soil, and drinking water, it is not going as far as testing town residents to see whether they have high levels of lead in their blood, for example.
While it's still not clear whether the higher rates of lung cancer could be caused by something such as smoking, [Jon Gerrard] said it's a sign that officials should be looking at diseases in Flin Flon and testing residents to see if they have been exposed to high levels of toxic substances.
