Viewed against this vast historical canvas, [Barbara Kingsolver]'s choice of protagonist is unlikely. Telling the story of Harrison Shepherd, through journals faithfully compiled by his long-suffering secretary, The Lacuna gives us history with a small h, as seen through the eyes of a rather pedestrian bystander.
With [Leon Trotsky]'s assassination, [Shepherd] returns to the U.S., setting up the second half of the novel and the confrontation with McCarthyism that is its denouement.
Despite this, Kingsolver's novel is timely and important, providing a parallel to the most recent chapter in a history of U.S. cultural witch hunts that we can only hope, for now, is closed.
