In January, 58,000 tonnes of Canadian durum wheat were confiscated in Italy because officials believed it had three times the allowable limit of ochratoxin under European standards.
Scientists don't know how ochratoxin causes cancer in animals, but [Richard Manderville] believes once it gets into the system, it can metabolize, attach to DNA and initiate a mutation that causes the disease.
Mycotoxins are unavoidable in cereals, but the public should be aware of them," said Health Canada spokesman Paul Duchesne.

We've all heard the term used as a euphemism for beer but the CWB says barley isn't just for frosty cold beverages anymore. The Winnipeg-based marketing agency is actively pursuing opportunities for barley-based food products, such as bread, bagels, flat breads, tortillas, granola bars, cereal and even donuts.
Lorelle Selinger, CWB's manager of marketing and sales for barley, said roughly one-third of all barley grown in Canada eventually ends up in a beer bottle, can or keg. The CWB is currently on the hunt for a higher-margin proposition for farmers than the present alternative, which is dumping the rest of their crops off as feed for cattle and pigs.
If (the CWB) can get bakers and processors to use more barley in their products, it's a new market for us. That might lead to (the dev...

THIRTY YEARS AGO The initial payments for the crop year starting Aug. 1 to producers from the Canadian Wheat Board for red spring wheat and durum will be $3 a bushel and acreage seeded to durum should be increased by 60 per cent to three million acres, Wheat Minister Otto Lang said. The government announced it is borrowing US$750 million U.S. through a public bond issue in New York as part of a continuing effort to slow the evaluation of the Canadian dollar.
