Sisimpur is an educational children's television program in Bangladesh that is co-produced by Sesame Workshop, the makers of Sesame Street. Sisimpur's goals include the support of Early Childhood Development (ECD) objectives in Bangladesh, such as the teaching of pre-academic skills to young children. In this paper we draw on qualitative research to explore how Sisimpur and its benefits are viewed by the family members and teachers of children in rural Bangladesh. Our results suggest that Sisimpur is valued by diese caregivers as a source of ideas and information about how best to raise children. We argue that Sisimpur's favorable reception is related to the success with which it has portrayed children on the show as both connected to Bangali traditions and able to take advantage of the...

Maternal Employment. There is a vast literature exploring the impact of maternal employment on children's educational attainment. O'Brien and Jones found that teenagers appeared to have the best chance of good exam results if they came from families where the-mother had a part-time job (O'Brien and Jones, 1999). Among other significant predictors of exam achievement were home ownership, the children's own aspirations to go on to further education, the absence of a girl or boyfriend at age 14, and the mother's propensity to praise. This study was somewhat limited by its research design, in particular because it was based on a cross-sectional survey of school children in a specific locality. Other studies based on longitudinal, representative samples have found that full-time maternal emp...

Interactions such as these may be quite stressful for the parent, contributing to small behavioral changes that add up to a decline in the quality of parenting (Ambert 2001).\n Thus, it is unlikely that regional and income differences between the samples account for the ethnic differences that we found regarding the association between childhood obesity and parental behavior. Given the high levels of attention accorded to obesity and widely publicized statements about an "obesity epidemic," it is possible that the gap between African American and European American parents has narrowed over time because recent public discussion has increased the salience of the issue among African American parents.

During the June 2004 and January 2006 federal election campaigns, the Liberal Party promised the creation of a universal, accessible childcare policy. Given the current scarcity of affordable, quality childcare throughout the country, this promise was, quite predictably, warmly received. At the same time, discussions about a national childcare policy raised important questions about ensuring the universality of accessible, quality care for children. Such issues have yet to be seriously deliberated in the academic, public and political discussions regarding the development of national childcare. This paper seeks to address questions about the effectiveness of federal involvement in early child education and care through the analysis of two other legislative initiatives created to support...
