Standing on the pier in Manitoba's most celebrated fishing community, Premier Gary Doer pledged more funding yesterday for the scientists studying Lake Winnipeg's shallow but troubled waters. Manitoba will contribute $100,000 toward the $600,000 required to keep the research vessel Namao afloat this summer on the world's 10th-largest lake, where an excess of nutrients is upsetting the ecological balance. The Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium has raised $450,000 of the budget so far -- $100,000 from the province, $200,000 from Manitoba Hydro, $50,000 from the City of Winnipeg and $100,000 in smaller grants from other sources, including rural municipalities, commercial fishermen and the pork industry.
