The goods are the bads in Canada's economic performance," noted CIBC World Markets economist Avery Shenfeld. "A domestically focused service sector maintained healthy forward momentum in November, but the export-oriented goods sector showed its third straight monthly drop, down 0.2 per cent. "There is all the speculation about a U.S. slowdown or recession, which hurts confidence," noted the report by economist Alex Carrick. "The employment situation in Canada has weakened. The most recent housing starts took a nose dive. And finally, gasoline price hikes, as a result of $100 US per barrel oil, have cut into discretionary incomes." "We now expect 2008 real GDP growth of just 1.3 per cent, down from 1.6 per cent previously," said Ted Carmichael, economist at J.P. Morgan, which also cut ...

According to the 2009 study, (online at www.ecovadis.com), the responses of a large number of European procurement directors to the "same strategic and operational questions to assess the progress of intentions as well as achievements" shed light on the development of sustainable procurement and moving from a "Why?" to a "How?" approach. When asked what would motivate implementing a sustainability and/or environmental policy, more than half said "interest from senior management" followed by the "need to comply with regulations." The third factor identified was "employee demand." Interestingly, while the top two factors chosen by public purchasers are also on the list of factors for companies, according to the study, "the prime reason for a company to implement a 'green' purchasing poli...

As Canada's largest public transit system and the third largest in North America, the TTC is uniquely poised to positively influence public health by altering its procurement process. The GPP serves to better align the TTC's purchasing practices with the City of Toronto's objectives to improve their environmental performance, address climate change, improve local air quality and encourage sustainable development. Organizations integrating "triple bottom line" (environmental, social and economic) considerations into their core business practices, including procurement activities, often experience challenges and the TTC has been no exception. The sheer scope of their effort is further compounded by the size, diversity and complexity of the organization. The TTC has hundreds of staff invol...
Using content analyses, this study examines whether board structure of small listed companies influence their shareholders' wealth. This study focuses on three elements of board structure, namely, board size, board composition and directors' remuneration to examine the relationship between board structure and shareholders' wealth. Shareholders' wealth is measured by the return on investment and earnings per share. The results show that out of the three elements of board structure, board size and board composition play an important role in influencing shareholders' wealth in small listed companies. The results support the findings in earlier studies that large number of directors and the proportion of executive directors in a board would instil better decision-making policy. The results ...
