  • This season is an opportunity to be more aware of the "shepherds" in own midst -- the poor, the homeless, the unemployed, the excluded, the vulnerable. Many of us have been affected by the present economic crisis. All of us see more evidence of child poverty, street people, homelessness and dependence on food banks. National Chief Phil Fontaine of the Assembly of First Nations earlier this year invited the Catholic bishops of our country, and all the faithful, to join in a new partnership with aboriginal peoples in tackling the poverty that afflicts them. The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace is reminding us how the present economic situation has worsened the already impoverished conditions of the developing countries. Yet terrible as the poverty of the First Nati...

  • Simons et al. investigate generational transmission by examining the possible effects of a parent's religion and parenting practices on a child's actual religious belief and deviant behaviors. An attempt is made to examine the intergenerational transmission of religiosity from parent to teenager. The results show that a parent's religiosity does have a direct effect on a child's religious belief but not on a child's deviant behavior. Instead, warm parenting that mediates through affiliation with deviant peers produces a significant effect on a teenager's behavior. Similar findings are documented for both black and white samples. This paper contributes to our understanding of the important role of a parent's religious belief in the intergenerational relations between parents and youth. T...

  • Our neighbours at the University of Regina are taking what could be a unique approach to education. The university will guarantee qualifying students a job six months after graduation. And not just any job. A "great job" in their "chosen field. The job guarantee would seem to only be viable because of Saskatchewan's low jobless rate of five per cent. That could change if the province's economic fortunes shifted, possibly dooming the proposal. Last week, I interviewed the university president, Vianne Timmons, about the program. She admitted that a change in Saskatchewan's economic situation "would be a challenge." She quickly added that the plan is a "proactive" approach to "student engagement." She says students don't often seek career counselling or other assistance until late in thei...

  • I've had clients scratch out their ethnic origin on their forms," sid [Sara Wolfe], because the clients are afraid of getting stereotyped. Wolfe said this is a concern for all Aboriginal women, regardless of background and family or economic situation. The practice is planning to bring in Elders and grandmothers. "This is really important for women who are away from their home communities and missing that guidance and support," Sara Wolfe said. Ultimately, "We'd like to see a birth centre in Toronto. While the practice grows, Wolfe is welcoming another addition into the community. Her first baby is due in September. She is confident that her labor will go well, and is planning on "being in the water." She will also have her midwives around her. "Having women who can empower you around...

  • The provincial government can't address the Canadian-dollar issue," Gerry Price, owner and president of E.H. Price Limited, conceded in an interview yesterday. "But the province does carry a good portion of the blame for our economic situation in Manitoba... because it's had six years to make this a more competitive environment for business and it hasn't done a thing. "All of these things are a kind of message to the owners of businesses... that we're not open for business," he said. "To be open for business you have to have a competitive tax regime, and we do not have a competitive tax regime." As well, Rob McBain, co-chair of the Manitoba division of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, warned earlier this month that Manitoba's manufacturing sector and its 68,000 jobs will virt...

  • A troubling example of the risks is the unprecedented pollution of the Athabasca River and northern Alberta groundwater which is a result of the massive development of the Alberta tar sands. Consider, it takes three to six barrels of water to produce one barrel of oil. Treated water, still laden with carcinogens, is returned to the Athabasca River or is retained in enormous ponds. As part of their ongoing thirst for water, oil companies are now proposing new refineries for oilsands bitumen on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes. A return of polluted water to the Great Lakes is virtually guaranteed because present regulatory standards provide insufficient protection. The natural environment is our life-support system and preserving healthy functional ecosystems is the only assurance that ou...

  • It will be Mr. [Stephen Harper]'s last chance to show he is finally treating (the economic situation) seriously," said [Ralph Goodale]. "There is a real sense of renewed hope and confidence in the party," said Goodale. "There is more cohesion that we've seen in some time. [Jack Layton] said he believes Harper will introduce a number of economic measures intended to entice the opposition just so Harper can keep his government alive for another few months. "If he can do that the coalition fades away," said Layton.
