This study addresses the extent of change and regional differences in gender roles in the Vietnamese family based on innovative surveys in northern and southern Vietnam. The similarities and differences in political, economic, and social histories between northern and southern Vietnam provide a compelling setting to investigate the impact of socialist policies and the recent shift from a centrally planned to a market economy on gender stratification in the domestic spheres. We assess determinants of the gender division of household labor among three marriage cohorts that underwent early marital years during 1) the Vietnam War and mass mobilization, 2) nationwide socialist collectivization and economic stagnation, and 3) market reform. Japan's economy is recovering from stagnation but household spending is weak, the government said in a monthly economic report Monday, as ministers urged caution about raising interest rates ahead of this week's central bank policy meeting. The horse-track company in Frank Stronach's Magna International corporate stable said Monday that it "has made significant strides in improving Magna Racino's financial results and remains optimistic regarding the long-term potential for Magna Racino. Such expressions as "weak" or "fragile" states are absent from Brazil's President Lula da Silva's domestic and diplomatic rhetoric. Instead, according to official statements of Lula's government, lawlessness, insurgency, transnational crime and terrorism, which are widely linked to state failure, are blamed on deep social causes that inflict social injustice and poverty to large portions of the world population. This article explains this proclivity of Lula's foreign policy as a result of colliding agendas prevailing inside Lula's party, and his governing coalition. The social and political bases of such divide are explored, and the process through which ideological goals prevail in his foreign agenda is described.

Based on a unique retrospective survey conducted in 2000 with several cohorts of men and women in Burkina Faso, the study analyzes how the transition to adulthood in the two largest urban centers of the country has evolved over the past twenty years. Results show that both the timing and the nature of important social steps in the lives of male and female youth, such as end of schooling, first paid employment, residential independence, first union and first birth, have undergone considerable changes since 1980. The period during which youth remain economically dependent on their elders seems clearly to be lengthening in Burkinabe cities. With a longer and more complex transition phase between childhood and adulthood, young people's life trajectories are also more diverse and new social ...
