His general thesis is not really new. Manitoba's lethargic economy is a result of personal and corporate tax rates higher than its western peers. [Niels Veldhuis] holds particular scorn for the province's corporate capital tax, something that doesn't even exist in B.C. and Alberta and is being quickly phased out in Saskatchewan.
Manitoba beat out only tiny P.E.I. and Nova Scotia in job creation last year and Veldhuis points out Manitoba's job creation record between 2000 and 2005 is the worst in the country and GDP growth per capita is second lowest over that period.
Notwithstanding an even more recent Statistics Canada report showing capital investment intentions in Manitoba for 2007 are second highest in the country, Veldhuis said when you start low it's easier to get a higher rate of...

Stock markets rose from their March depths as investors reacted every time economic statistics showed any sign of improvement. On the whole "improvement" meant that the rate of decline was slowing down. Auto sales declines that weren't quite as bad as the month before, job losses that seemed to be slowing, all this improvement led to the belief that "green shoots" were appearing in the economy.
The talk now in the United States and Britain is that their economies may need another round of stimulus packages to avoid slipping back into the deep recession of earlier this year -- a so-called "double dip" recession.
There are several reasons why western economies aren't recovering as robustly as expected. In the United States, the great American consumer has turned into the great American sa...

Amid all the celebration that is Folklorama, a more in-depth look at immigration in Manitoba is more crucial then ever. Immigration patterns have changed dramatically over the last quarter century. While more immigrants arriving today are coming from non-traditional source countries, they are generally far more educated than newcomers a quarter of a century ago, and more than current born Canadians. Despite this, the earnings and income of recent immigrants have been on the decline and poverty rates have risen, according to Statistics Canada.
Economic class immigrants are recruited specifically for the needs of Manitoba's labour market through the province's aggressive Provincial Nominee Program. The program was developed largely in response to the business community's concern with the...

Statistics Canada's revised economic accounts for 2006, also released Thursday, booked Manitoba's growth at 3.2 per cent in 2006 compared to the national rate of 2.8 per cent.
It is a combination of a lot of things going well," said Marie-Christine Bernard, author of the Conference Board report. "There has been personal tax cuts and all those new housing starts means that consumer spending is very strong.
"When we bought the mine, it was an unloved property," [Dale Ginn] said. "That's changed."

Using content analyses, this study examines whether board structure of small listed companies influence their shareholders' wealth. This study focuses on three elements of board structure, namely, board size, board composition and directors' remuneration to examine the relationship between board structure and shareholders' wealth. Shareholders' wealth is measured by the return on investment and earnings per share. The results show that out of the three elements of board structure, board size and board composition play an important role in influencing shareholders' wealth in small listed companies. The results support the findings in earlier studies that large number of directors and the proportion of executive directors in a board would instil better decision-making policy. The results ...
