  • Never met Arkee Whitlock. Don't know much about him other than he apparently had a great pre-season for the Edmonton Eskimos and they were expecting a huge contribution from him last week as he stepped in for the injured Jesse Lumsden. But watching him struggle against the Alouettes -- actually, struggle doesn't even begin to describe his nightmare -- I found myself both screaming for Canadian Calvin McCarty to get some work and cringing every time Whitlock exited the huddle, fearing that his car-wreck of a game would become even more gruesome. Edmonton Sun columnist Terry Jones wondered aloud if there had ever been a player in the CFL who had a more-disastrous debut than Whitlock (two dropped touchdown passes, had a fumble that led to a TD and a tipped pass that was returned for anot...

  • A City of Brandon-issued bill, electronically obtained by the Brandon Sun, shows Glen Hamilton-Brown of Edmonton was sent a bill for $669, when Brandon emergency services personnel helped push his 1999 Chevrolet Silverado truck off the road, disconnected the battery and assisted ambulance personnel on scene with "assessing (a) patient." When collisions happen on provincial highways, whether they are inside or outside of city limits, and work is done by emergency services, one of two province-wide fees set by Manitoba Public Insurance ($669 or $891) could apply.

  • C.'s win over Saskatchewan helped Wally Buono avoid his first 1-5 start in 20 years of coaching... When Ricky Ray connected with Kamau Peterson for a five-yard score in the first quarter in Hamilton on Saturday it marked the first time in six games the Esks had scored a TD in the opening 15 minutes. Next up: an interception. Edmonton has yet to pick off an opposition pass. Winnipeg, by comparison, leads with 14. The Eskimo defenders have started a pool where everybody throws in $20 a week and the first to steal a pass wins the pot. "We had two pools at the start of the season," linebacker Maurice Lloyd told the Edmonton Sun. "One for the first sack of the year and one for the first interception. You could throw in $20 to whichever one you wanted to be part of or choose not to particip...

  • Out in Edmonton, I was stunned to read a column by Terry Jones in the Edmonton Sun in which Terry felt he needed to voice his support for Danny Maciocia NOT to be fired. I mean, didn't Danny, in his rookie season of 2005, WIN THE GREY CUP? If there ever was a team in the CFL that didn't need to win this year to pay the bills, it is Edmonton, but of course they are perpetually concerned about maintaining that playoff streak in the City of Champions. In the NFL, winning the championship trophy automatically buys the head coach about 4.69 more years at his post -- guaranteed. As long as he shows up during that time, he will remain employed. In the CFL, the fans and media give you the pre-season to flounder about and work it out, and then they start to reel you back in.

  • "I think if I wasn't so outspoken, it might have been different (in Saskatchewan)," said [Roy Shivers] in an interview with the Vancouver Sun's Iain McIntyre. "I'm not the one to shrink back and not express my opinions. If you don't like that, so be it. But don't take it out on me simply because I'm another colour persuasion. Cam is out of this world," B.C.'s Brent Johnson told reporters. "It's ridiculous. It's not even fair. He's amazing. And I love it. When teams watch film, they must think, 'Well, we can't do anything about this.' " Anthony Calvillo had gone four complete games without being intercepted before throwing three picks in Montreal's loss to Calgary. His first mistake ended a streak of 179 attempts without an interception... Saskatchewan's Wes Cates rushed for 122 ya...

  • You've gotta be in there to know. I'm on the outside looking in, so I couldn't even say," said [Richie Williams], a 26-year-old out of Appalachian State. "If anything, it's a credit to Hamilton and probably good for the league that people are trying to spy on them, y'know, cuz I don't know that anyone would have tried to spy on Hamilton the last year or so," said Esks receiver Kamau Peterson to the Edmonton Sun. Tiger-Cats coach Marcel Bellefeuille was pleased with his team's 31-28 win over B.C., but knows it's a tough climb for a franchise that has four straight losing seasons. "We won't gain respect until we win some more," he told Canwest News Service.
