Aboriginal candidates didn't fair well in the riding during the last election. Three of the five candidates battling for the seat--incumbent MP Rick Laliberte, who ran as an independent, Earl Cook for the NDP and Al Ducharme for the Liberals--were Aboriginal, but none drew enough votes to win. But those results don't concern [Gary Merasty] or [Anita Jackson].
I think in the last election, the majority of the support went to the Aboriginal candidates, it was just split. So this time there will not be a split," Merasty said. "There's a huge outpouring of support for myself and my candidacy and the Liberal Party, based on the policies that have been announced and worked on and the relationships established over the years. So we're quite confident that the electorate will come out and incr...

CHILDREN and honeymoons don't mix, as Chile's new president, Michelle Bachelet, found to her cost when children at the country's secondary schools came out on strike last month. Their demand for better education not only interrupted her supposed idyll with the electorate, but also exposed apparent inconsistencies in the promises with which she had wooed the country.
The students also questioned the government's insistence on tight spending. With state coffers brimming with record income from copper, Chile's main export, why, they asked, didn't the government put its money where its mouth was and invest in their future?
Bachelet is also being criticized for running too tight a ship, thus undermining her ministers' ability to produce results. "They're all inhibited. She needs to chart a c...

[Michael Ignatieff]'s style may be different from his prickly predecessor Stephane Dion but the results of his leadership so far are very similar. Instead of revitalizing the Liberal party in the electorate's eyes, Ignatieff's leadership has resulted in little change. Opinion polls show growing support for Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservatives and strengthening of the Bloc Quebecois in Quebec where the Liberals need to make gains.
Politically, there is room for Ignatieff to differentiate himself and his party from the government and to appear a real alternative. It hasn't happened in part because he's allowed the Tories' attacks to stick to him. The Conservative adds that detailed Ignatieff's time as an academic and commentator in England and at Harvard University in the United ...

We have also seen how a mayor can wield his power in this past election when mayoral candidate [Sam Katz] publicly endorsed certain candidates. As I have stated elsewhere, I can understand this strategy because it is easier and more efficient working with people who have similar political ideologies, work and community experience, working styles, and goals for the city than people who tend to not be on the same political wavelength. But the Katz slate did not totally pan out. Although there may be a bit more acrimony and dissent than perhaps Katz would like, there will also be debate and along with that, hopefully better decisions that represent the best interests for all citizens in Winnipeg. And since we do not have political party framework at the local level, the 'endorsed' candidat...
