For Winnipegger Don Himbeault, his first cars were old cars, and when it came to finding a project, he thought it would be fun to do an old car with a twist, by blending a vintage automobile with something from the sustainable-living category, namely an electric car. An engineer, Himbeault works as a technical consultant in the research and development field for clients at Deloitte & Touche. "I saw many new electric cars being offered but not many electric conversions," says Himbeault. The past president of the Association of Professional Engineers & Geosciences of Manitoba (APEGM), Himbeault saw a Chevrolet Corvair that had been converted to electric and initially began looking for one to use as a platform for his electric conversion.
In August of 2008, his search led him to ...

While the air ride system is definitely state-of-the-art, the rest of the Ponch is delightfully old-tech. "Pulling a U-turn is hell," said [Andrew Pruden], referring to the standard steering. With only 102,000 original miles, there is plenty of life left in the 261 cubic inch inline six. The stovebolt still wears the original oil bath air cleaner, however the new electrical demands did require an alternator conversion to replace the original generator. The three-on-the-tree standard transmission is always good for a double take by passing cruisers. Pruden appreciates the powertrain's simplicity. "If something is wrong with the engine, it's literally one of ten things." The 261 pre-dates any form of emission controls, as evidenced by the crankcase vent tube that lets gas-rich fumes tumbl...

STILL riding on the runaway success of their 1949 to '51 post war models, Ford was the only automaker to totally restyle their cars for 1952. Body lines and fenders were now virtually hood height and the cars rode much lower than previous models, for a modern cutting-edge appearance. Veteran road-tester Tom McCahill went as far as to call the totally restyled '52, "the best looking Ford ever built." For 1953 and '54, Ford continued to make moderate trim changes and update the mechanicals, including an expanded option list that included power-assisted steering, brakes, windows and seats. Previously, these features were only offered in luxury cars costing thousands more and making them available in the low-cost Ford models helped boost sales and profits for the Ford Motor Company.
