For Winnipegger Don Himbeault, his first cars were old cars, and when it came to finding a project, he thought it would be fun to do an old car with a twist, by blending a vintage automobile with something from the sustainable-living category, namely an electric car. An engineer, Himbeault works as a technical consultant in the research and development field for clients at Deloitte & Touche. "I saw many new electric cars being offered but not many electric conversions," says Himbeault. The past president of the Association of Professional Engineers & Geosciences of Manitoba (APEGM), Himbeault saw a Chevrolet Corvair that had been converted to electric and initially began looking for one to use as a platform for his electric conversion.

SK: Every company, not just automotive, is trying to grapple with that. I think we're in for a challenging year (in 2009) just from an economic standpoint. I think we're getting close to a recession if we're not already in it. And I'm worried about the job losses that are going to hit us, especially in Ontario. From our standpoint, we have always been very frugal, but, maybe (we'll be) even more so going into next year. It's changed a lot of our plans. We're going to stick to our core business and batten down the hatches.
SK: There are a lot of initiatives. The R&D spending for this year for Hyundai Motor Company jumped to 5.3 per cent from 4.8 per cent of the company's total expenditure -- almost $2 billion. And most of that has been focusing on improving fuel economy. That doesn't...

USING MULTIPLE PROPULSION systems to provide motive power, the term 'hybrid vehicle' most commonly refers to gasoline-electric models such as the popular Toyota Prius (a mid-size car with a 1.5 litre, 4 cylinder engine), the world's first mass-produced hybrid. With the option of running on either regular fuel and/or electric batteries to power internalcombustion engines and electric motors, these hybrids no longer even need to plugin as regenerative braking recharges the batteries by capturing kinetic energy.
The city's fleet has everything from buses through ambulances and fire trucks - we do maintenance on police vehicles but don't manage them - snow ploughs, pickup trucks, and we look after twenty garbage trucks as well. Our first hybrid was the Prius; it's the mayors car. We acquir...

What is a plug-in hybrid? Basically, it has both gasoline and electric power like a conventional hybrid, but it can be plugged into a 120-volt electrical outlet to charge the batteries. Essentially, it's an electric vehicle with gasoline engine backup. In practice, the electric motor is used as the primary power source, but has a limited range. When the batteries run down, you switch to the gasoline engine and carry on with your journey.
Apart from some intriguing concepts, there's not too much out there in "real world" terms as far as these new vehicles go, but the technology got a start recently when DaimlerChrysler built a series of 2007 Dodge Sprinter plug-in hybrids for day-to-day use. Chrysler claims to be the only automaker testing plug-in hybrids in North America with actual cus...

China has experienced pressing energy shortages in recent years, and Beijing has intensified its efforts to secure China's energy supply through both increased domestic production and external expansion. In this paper, I first analyze China's global quest for energy by looking at the correlation between China's economic growth and its energy security concerns. I then examine the implications of China's "go-out" strategy through two sets of case studies. I argue that China's global search for energy is primarily driven by its rapid economic growth, out of insecurity rather than a master plan to dominate the world, and that China's energy security issues have multiple implications beyond simple economic concerns. Finally, I recommend a forward-looking engagement policy to be adapted by Ca...

WOULD you like a doughnut with your carbon emissions? At some point -- hopefully soon -- we will reach our tipping point. No more sugar-coating about what's in store if we don't slash fossil fuel consumption. Rather, we'll demand a new economic recipe that builds in caps for greenhouse-gas-producing industries, one that uses carbon taxes to feed electric trains and takes methane from landfills to fuel hybrid buses.
When we get serious about global warming, we'll just ban drive-thrus and get it over with. We'll start with a moratorium, like the one we imposed on intensive livestock operations. Santa Cruz banned drive-thrus almost 20 years ago and many cities in North America are imposing strict limits on, or banning drive-thrus. Hamilton, for example, is looking at a drive-thru moratoriu...
