A lack of understanding of the waste flow of durable goods complicates decision making, especially in the face of technological change and obsolescence. To address the problem, this study considers the modeling of the waste flow of durable goods, using televisions to illustrate the requirements for forecasting and the magnitude of the associated uncertainty. A combination of laws in various jurisdictions and the emergence of alternate technology trajectories for televisions - the flat panel display and phase-out of analogue broadcasting - make this example particularly timely. The findings suggest that the reuse of lead-containing cathode ray tube (CRT) glass is worth consideration, even though the adoption of flat panel TV technology will eliminate this controversial waste stream at so...

While U.S. sales of devices are still expected to grow 7 per cent overall in 2008, consumers in recent weeks have significantly shifted how they spend money, Jason Oxman, CEA vice-president of industry affairs, said.
Although unit volume largely held up so far this quarter, price declines were steeper than we had anticipated, particularly over Black Friday weekend," Oxman said. "Consumers were switching to smaller, less-expensive products.
In January 2008, half of all flat-panel TV sets sold in the U.S. were 32 inches or bigger, according to CEA. In November, that dropped to 36 per cent.

Because our training models in Clinical Psychology have not kept pace with the rapid changes in the health care marketplace, we may be in danger of preparing psychologists for markets that no longer exist. The next generations of psychologists will require the skills of the entrepreneur and the leader in addition to a range of core clinical skills. At the same time, our profession's historic commitment to science as the best epistemic game in town may founder if we fail to pay better attention to knowledge translation (i.e., how to move scientific findings expeditiously from the laboratory into practice).
