Smart Homes Are the Smart Choice
Energy costs more during peak times, but consumers aren't aware of how much they use during the expensive times since their usage is typically calculated on a monthly basis. A smart meter shows actual current usage -- real-time information -- about the price of electricity so you can talk to and program your house based on what you know. It's long overdue that we have a meter that helps consumers manage their energy consumption. But for a house to be really smart, I think we need to do more. ...

Letter of the Day [Derived Headline]
If Prof. Ross Garnaut's plans to reduce emissions in Australia actually result in altering the forms of energy in use and in reducing overall energy consumption, then they point in the right direction. Unfortunately, he used global warming as part of his rationale. This means that he is open to be dismissed as "melodramatic." There is a very real danger that the current financial meltdown will prompt a retreat into short-term thinking. A "steady as you go," "all is well in Canada" government ...

Compact Bulbs Not As Green As Once Thought
That's because CFLs don't throw off the same heat as incandescent bulbs, meaning people who install them turn up the heat in winter. Physics department head Peter Blunden found using CFLs in Winnipeg could cut energy consumption by 67 per cent, "but that's not the whole story," he said. "The issue is all the heat that's thrown off by the incandescents." Last month B.C. Hydro reported the province's emissions could go up as people install compact fluorescents and as a result, use more natural...

"A lot of the training is from architects and mechanical engineers. We're learning about leakage from buildings, how they're designed, heat pumps, air-conditioning units and steam absorbers, chiller that use steam to reduce electrical demand," said [Sandy Milat], who is taking the program with 50 other UBC employers as part of the university's ecotrek initiative to reduce energy, water use and greenhouse gas emissions. According to UBC, the ecotrek project, which involves rebuilding and retro...

They're expected to jump by another 50 to 60 per cent in fiscal 2007-2008, [Rick Thurston] said, thanks in part to a new energy rebate being offered in Ontario and to a national convenience store chain -- Mac's Convenience Stores -- saying it plans to install the air doors in all of its roughly 4,700 retail outlets in Canada over the next few years. Thurston said that desire by Mac's and other businesses to reduce their energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions is what's helping to fuel...

Huge Users to Get Break On Hydro
In its order, the PUB says, "Presently the board is not aware of any similar relief program for large energy consumption customers in any other jurisdiction. Indeed, Manitoba Hydro has regularly maintained that the rates charged for electricity in Manitoba are among the lowest, if not the lowest, in North America." "If you are part of a multinational or a multiplant operation and something can be made in one place or another, it's going to be made (at the lower-cost plant)," the official said...

Heat On Ignatieff Cements Front-Runner Status
[Bob Rae] said it's "sensible" to link taxation to pollution and to encourage Canadians to change their energy-consumption patterns. But he added: "If you mean you're going to be hitting one particular industry, one particular product, one particular province, it's not a good idea." Holding up a newspaper with a front-page story on [Michael Ignatieff]'s pitch for a more aggressive role for Canada's military in Afghanistan and other global trouble spots, [Joe Volpe] said, "I read it and I agre...
