has received an Award of Excellence in Innovation at the Consulting Engineers of Manitoba Awards of Excellence for its work on the Twin Red River Floodway Bridges on the Trans-Canada Highway East. The goal of the Manitoba Floodway Expansion Project is to accomodate a one-in-700 year flood, which requires changes to the 12 existing bridges that cross The Floodway. The Manitoba Floodway Authority retained UMA's Winnipeg office to provide detailed design and contract administration services for new twin, three-lane, 349-meter Red River Floodway bridges on the TransCanada. The project was completed within a tight schedule and under budget while maximizing the safety of the travelling public during construction.

China has experienced pressing energy shortages in recent years, and Beijing has intensified its efforts to secure China's energy supply through both increased domestic production and external expansion. In this paper, I first analyze China's global quest for energy by looking at the correlation between China's economic growth and its energy security concerns. I then examine the implications of China's "go-out" strategy through two sets of case studies. I argue that China's global search for energy is primarily driven by its rapid economic growth, out of insecurity rather than a master plan to dominate the world, and that China's energy security issues have multiple implications beyond simple economic concerns. Finally, I recommend a forward-looking engagement policy to be adapted by Ca...

Those factors have boosted [Jeff Rubin]'s view that the commodity-rich TSX "is positioned to significantly outperform the U.S. market and offer greater diversification for investors.
Oil prices don't necessarily have to go higher" for TSX energy shares to gain, Rubin said. "They just have to stay at these levels to convince still skeptical markets that these levels are sustainable."
"Two-thirds of the TSX's superior total return performance over the S P 500 over last year was due to the outperformance of various Canadian sectors over their U.S. market counterparts. This is particularly true for energy and material stocks, which since the beginning of the year have played decisive roles in the better overall performance of the Canadian markets," Rubin said.

When [Craig Alexander] says that global investing can add diversification to a portfolio and subsequently reduce volatility, he doesn't mean loading up Latin America, Asia or emerging markets. The more narrow (geographically or by sector) a fund's mandate, the greater the risk of extreme short-term price fluctuations. That may be fine when you're 30 years old, but not when you're 65. No, the older you are the more you should look to broadly diversified international funds.
Furthermore, the Canadian stock market is dominated by just a few industries, with financial services and energy making up 60 per cent of the total market, while some industries like health care and technology are barely represented at all. And if that weren't reason enough to broaden your investment scope, consider t...
