Green building design is moving from the domain of institutional and special purpose properties to mainstream applications in industrial, retail and office commercial markets. Evidence of this trend can be found in recent announcements for new green design office and mixed-use projects in major Canadian centers. Appraisers need to understand the design, operation and economics of green buildings to understand how markets will react to these properties. Lower operating expenses, specifically for energy consumption, are often promoted as a benefit of green buildings. The Green Building Rating System, based on LEEDTM Canada NC, is the Canadian standard for new construction. A review of published literature on green building economics reveals a weight of information on the opportunity to re...

Perhaps they have missed the point. If Manitoba was to move towards smart grids and distributed energy, perhaps new dams and transmission lines may not be required in northern Manitoba.
At the very minimum, to move to smart grids and distributed energy (i.e. energy generated from many instead of a few locations) would: improve the security of supply of energy across Manitoba; distribute benefits associated with electrical energy production more equitably throughout Manitoba; encourage the adoption of combined heat-and-power energy systems in agricultural, commercial, industrial and institutional settings; reduce greenhouse gas emissions and negative environmental impacts associated with energy mega-project development; create a platform to implement demand-side energy management systems...

China has experienced pressing energy shortages in recent years, and Beijing has intensified its efforts to secure China's energy supply through both increased domestic production and external expansion. In this paper, I first analyze China's global quest for energy by looking at the correlation between China's economic growth and its energy security concerns. I then examine the implications of China's "go-out" strategy through two sets of case studies. I argue that China's global search for energy is primarily driven by its rapid economic growth, out of insecurity rather than a master plan to dominate the world, and that China's energy security issues have multiple implications beyond simple economic concerns. Finally, I recommend a forward-looking engagement policy to be adapted by Ca...

This paper presents a case study of the co-operative design, development, and implementation of an XBRL-enabled interorganizational system (IOS) by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, the Reserve Bank of Australia (central bank), and the Australian Bureau of Statistics to revolutionize reporting by financial institutions in Australia. The findings illustrate that the complexity of data consumption patterns drove increased interdependence within the financial information supply chain requiring the co-operative development of context sensitive data exchanges and commodity-like IT infrastructures. The paper concludes that the co-operative model to IOS development exhibited here is likely to be more suited to the development of systems for financial information supply chains tha...
