  • What is the professional's responsibility with regard to greenwashing? Does our mandate include the demystification of advertising campaigns and corporate promotional strategies? Or do we simply rely on "buyer beware" and pass the responsibility for due diligence and information gathering to our clients? As an example, we were engaged in a structural inspection of a residence recently. A home inspector was not satisfied that the building was structurally sound, so he had the prospective owner (who had made an offer to purchase conditional on an inspection) contact us to inspect the foundation of the house. Upon inspection, the building proved to be in average structural condition for its age and construction style. It was not in imminent danger of collapse, but some upgrades could have ...

  • I don't always tell people right away what I do for a living," he says sheepishly. "Everyone has something to say about traffic. Not here -- and that's due to a decision made by city leaders when Unicity was formed in 1972. The former "cities" were determined not be left off a freeway that would go around or through the centre of Winnipeg. As a result, all we've got are arterial roads, some as crooked as a dog's hind leg, that connect the various communities. "The more signals you have, the more opportunity to have failures," he says. "You need to make sure they are properly spaced. I give my opinion on where they should be and the implications of those decisions. Really, it's up to my bosses to make those decisions. Sometimes I may want to have a new traffic signal installed but they...

Koropatnick said Spikula did not attend the hearing, but was represented by his own lawyer. The APEGM published notices in the Free Press and the Dauphin Herald stating that Spikula had been suspended. Koropatnick said if any municipal building inspector or permit department accepts stamped drawings from Spikula while the suspension is in effect, they could be held civilly liable if there are problems with those projects.

  • We are all winners in this program. The province and the country get experienced professionals," said engineering dean Doug Ruth. The course work was not easy, [Gustavo Naigeboren] said, but, "Only one year after I started my training, I got my engineering status. Officials estimated that there are 140 to 200 immigrants to Manitoba each year who are "self-declared engineers", but some are technicians, or have other training which is not recognized here as an engineering education.

  • Community activists, anti-war crusaders and skeptics of Big Government lined the aisles and filled the seats at the University of Winnipeg for the chance to discuss the event with the 70-minute documentary's producer, Barrie Zwicker. I know. I know. But I didn't leave my tin foil hat in the car!" swore Michael Okrainec. "And I didn't even mention [George W. Bush] in the classroom reading My Pet Goat," he laughed. That's the infamous scene from Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 where Bush is caught on film continuing to read a story to kids in a classroom despite the fact he's just been informed that the first plane has slammed into the WTC.

Kathy Knight, executive director of the Winnipeg-based Information and Communication Technology Association (ICTA), said immigrants like Capinpin have problems getting IT jobs, but the shortage is at the entry level only. "The reason is some companies have transported entry-level jobs offshore, mainly to South Asian countries," Knight said. Knight said the association itself is trying to smooth the transition for both employers and immigrants. She said ICTA is working with the province's Labour Market Strategy for Immigrants, which helps new Canadia...
