[BRIT Julian Dimech], 35, an anesthesiologist in intensive care from Newcastle, England, had just run into Destination Winnipeg on Portage Avenue to grab a city map when his unlocked deep green-coloured DaVinci Destination bike disappeared.
I'm absolutely steaming. And I'm upset at myself too. It's really my whole home that's been taken away, as well as my transportation.
"I stupidly didn't lock it. I was inside for all of 10 seconds and then it was gone."

That's why I like travelling around Manitoba with Jock Lehr, a University of Winnipeg geographer. Lehr, who was born in England, is fascinated by rural Manitoba, particularly those parts settled by Ukrainians. He's even learning the Ukrainian language.
You just have to look at the layout of the early French settlements along the Red River to know this is wrong. Most of them have a large Roman Catholic church facing a major street with a boulevard. At least 14 Ukrainian churches are in the Gardenton area. Canada's oldest Ukrainian church -- St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox -- is in this area. It was completed in 1899.
The last stop on Lehr's tour was St. Elias Ukrainian Orthodox, a tiny, exquisite church built in 1910 at Serko, which is so small it's not on the province's road map. Neith...

I don't know if it's been the same in Canada, but recently there's been a lot of political interest in looking at happiness as a measure of a country's performance, rather than just GDP (gross domestic product)," [White] said from Leicester.
"I guess we can feel proud about being a country that does very well.... We can feel good about that," said [Ulrich Schimmack], whose areas of research include happiness and well-being. "Of course, that doesn't mean that we can't try to do even better.
"Japan is an interesting anomaly," said White, noting that the country enjoys all the ingredients that make up a sense of well-being. "And yet they're one of the least happy developed nations in the world. They're 90th."

The book, just over 300 pages, is full of all the information you'll need and has an element of cool as well. One chapter, The dance of Buenos Aires, is all about the tango. "The tango is macho, the tango is strong. It smells of wine and tastes like death." Hmmm.
It's not about the destination but all it has to offer," said Jackie Britton, CEO of Off the Beaten Path. "More people want a vacation that takes them beyond the hotel walls. They are no longer satisfied with the all-inclusive approach which consists of Americanized buffet food and an endless supply of liquor.
