The irreversible nature of extinction makes this impact of particular concern," reads one of the memorandums, released to the Pembina Institute, an environmental research group, under the Access to Information Act. "Current scientific knowledge indicates that if serious risks such as the extinction of significant numbers of species globally or a sea level rise of 7m from the irreversible melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet are to be avoided, then it would be desirable to avoid a global temperature increase of greater than approximately 2 C above pre-industrial (levels).
"It is imperative to stabilize global atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in order to prevent a 'runaway' greenhouse effect," said the documents. "Decisions made with respect to emission reductions should ta...

HIGH OIL AND GAS revenues may be fueling the Alberta powerhouse today, but the Alberta government is not sitting back and idling; it is expanding its economy by using innovation to build on natural resource strengths. Alberta is strengthening the province's research system by facilitating research and development collaborations between governments, publicly-funded institutions and industry. These innovative research and development collaborations are helping Alberta to establish a competitive knowledge-based economy.
In January 2006, three memoranda of understanding (MOU) were signed between the Alberta government and Hewlett-Packard (HP) to set the stage for the development of joint research projects. Proposed projects include a new facility at the University of Calgary for work on adv...

Noise exposure has been the focus of research attention for nearly 40 years, since the classic work by Glass and Singer (1972). Several studies have documented adverse effects of chronic noise exposure on children, including disrupted reading acquisition (Bronzaft & McCarthy, 1975; Evans & Maxwell, 1997), memory impairment (Hygge, Evans, & Bullinger, 2002), and physiological stress responses (Evans, Hygge, & Bullinger, 1995). Fortunately, these effects appear to be reversible: The introduction of noise attenuation strategies resolved reading problems in elementary school children (Bronzaft, 1981), and the end of chronic noise exposure (because of the closing of a nearby airport) reversed the adverse effects on memory (Hygge et al., 2002). There is mounting evidence that ...

has joined the Manitoba Canola Growers Association as the provincial environmental plan co-ordinator. [Jewel Mazur] has her bachelor of science degree from the University of Manitoba and a master of natural resource management from the Natural Resources Institute. Mazur grew up on a farm north of Rossburn and helps her husband run a mixed farm northeast of Russell. The Provincial Environmental Plan is a voluntary, commodity-based version of an equivalent agri-environmental plan. MCGA is offering this option to producers as a complementary alternative to individual environmental farm plans. The PEP targets water quality as a single environmental priority common to all canola producers in Manitoba. MCGA is a member organization committed to maximizing net income from canola.
