Liberal and NDP MPs have lambasted the government for its plans to make pay equity part of collective agreement negotiations with unions and say they don't trust Prime Minister Stephen Harper as they are worried he will to use the law to bargain away a woman's right to equal pay for equal work of equal value.
That approach was taken in Manitoba in the mid-1980s. The Manitoba law, which was the first pay equity legislation in Canada, set up a commission to ensure the issue was being dealt with, and established a process to include pay equity negotiations and settlements in the bargaining process.
