They attribute this growth in large part to the adoption of these principles by several major public-sector pension plans. Helping out is the broad availability of SRI index mutual funds for the general public, adding to the funds traditionally available through SRI pioneers like Ethical Funds, Meritas and Acuity Funds, Ltd.
The broad adoption is in large part thanks to the tireless dedication of Michael Jantzi, founder in 1992 of Jantzi Research and developer of the Jantzi Social IndexR in 2000. His Canadian equity index has given pension plans and mutual fund managers a proven methodology for selecting investee companies based on their industry ranking on those SRI criteria I mentioned. It has also outperformed the S&P/TSX Composite and the S&P/TSX 60 slightly since 2000.

Premier Gary Doer's pending address change hasn't made a dent in the NDP's popularity with Manitoba voters, a new Probe Research/Free Press survey says.
We always talk about the equity that Doer brings to the party and to the electorate," Probe Research president Scott MacKay said. "Does his departure leave this big hole and this hollowness? There was nothing.
"I think that people are not electrified by the Tories," MacKay said. "I just think they haven't done much to show themselves as a government-in-waiting.

LIKE two drunken frat boys looking to out-gross one another after having struck out with their sorority dates, North America's last two remaining domestic automakers seem to be reeling from one Porky's vignette to another. If they're not puking up profits, they're being embarrassed with the wrong products at the wrong time (you may have to actually watch the 1982 teen classic to get that reference).
Though it's had its fair share of cosmetic enhancements over three years, the Crown Vic (and its sidekick, the Lincoln Town Car) have seen precious few technological updates in the last 15 years. In fact, it's the last passenger car in North America to use a body-on-frame chassis with a solid rear axle and Ford has the audacity to wonder why it's not popular with consumers (though it remains...

Previous research has found that high levels of education and job commitment tend to generate dissimilar patterns of family formation and household responsibility for men and women. Using university-based academics as examples of highly educated professionals with strong career commitment, this paper investigates their family circumstances through a survey of previous research and qualitative interviews in New Zealand. Although more women are now entering the academic profession and moving into senior positions, their personal biographies often differ from their male counterparts. The paper reveals the extent of family differences, exploring gendered priorities, perceptions and constraints reported by academics with similar educational qualifications. The paper argues that family patter...

In recognition of the growing importance of small business ownership by women to the economic well-being of national economies, considerable academic attention has been given to identifying the reasons why women enter self-employment. However, little is known about the motivations for women to become franchisors. This represents an important gap in the literature. While the absence of research may be due to early beliefs that women are risk averse individuals that tend to limit the growth of their enterprises, more recent studies conclude that women perceive small business ownership as a vehicle for rapid growth and wealth creation. On this basis, franchising should represent an appealing business expansion strategy as it minimizes capital, labor, and managerial limitations on firm grow...

This study investigates if and how the use of the retroactive method to account for a mandatory accounting change affects a firm's measurement and recognition choices. We examine if reporting incentives and constraints are associated with the magnitude of transitional goodwill impairment losses reported by Canadian firms implementing Section 3062 on purchased goodwill. Our results indicate firms have an incentive to both overstate and understate transitional goodwill impairment losses. We also show that financially literate and independent audit committees constrain managerial opportunism.
