In truth, being a humanitarian aid worker has always been a bit of a dangerous profession. Travelling in the world's poorer nations always poses a risk, although for decades the greatest dangers came from driving on the perilous roads in many developing countries, or from disease. But violent death has always also lurked in the background. I remember a visit to Eritrea in 1991, just after the Eritrean rebels had captured the port of Massawa. Together with two other aid workers, we snuck into rebel-held areas from the Sudanese border to see if the port was ready to receive food shipments. We travelled at night in order to avoid detection by the Ethiopian fighter jets that roared overhead in daytime. During the day, we stayed in caves hewn out of hillsides by the Eritreans.
