While the essential oils industry is well established in other parts of the country such as Quebec, Alberta and B.C., it has been slow to get off the ground in Saskatchewan, [Bill Plunz] said. Despite being new to the game, Saskatchewan manufacturers should be able to make inroads into the markets for essential oils because they will be able to offer a product that is unique. That's because the qualities of the oils are affected by things like climate and soil conditions, so oil produced from a plant grown in Saskatchewan will differ from oil produced from the same species of plant grown in another part of the country.
While Plunz is hesitant to make any predictions about whether La Ronge Wild Rice Corporation will be entering the essential oils industry until he's had a chance to do mo...

ANSWER: Cut a sponge to fit inside of a plastic container. Into the container pour 4 tbsp. cooking oil plus the following essential oils: 8 drops rosewood, 8 drops grapefruit, 8 drops peppermint and 5 drops cinnamon. Essential oils are about $10 per bottle but they last for years and years. You can purchase essential oils at health food stores as well as some grocery stores. Next, puncture holes into the lid and secure it tightly so that no oil spills. As months go by and the smell begins to fade make the holes of the lid larger so that additional fragrance is expelled.

Curious to know more about the Egyptian holidaymakers, I commented on the differences between cultures. To my surprise, one of the women, who spoke excellent English, let out a hearty guffaw. Their modest attire, she said with a giggle, had little to do with tradition. They were from Cairo, where in summer, temperatures soar above 40 degrees Celsius. Here, on the Red Sea, it was "only" 26 degrees. The women were dressed warmly, she assured me, because they were feeling cold and couldn't understand how the other tourists could dress so scantily on a chilly day!
The balmy temperatures -- at least for people from cooler climes -- draw thousands of vacationers to the region the tourism industry has dubbed the "Egyptian Riviera." (Of the nine million visitors to Egypt in 2006, one million we...

Vinyl odour results from additives and stabilizers that give the vinyl its particular performance attributes, as well as the printing inks. Since the smell is as strong as it was two years ago, the problem does sound like it is definitely in the general makeup of the textile. Do not lay damp newspaper inside the chest; doing so will leave you with a transferred ink stain on the vinyl. Your best bet is to overpower the chemical smell with another smell. Wipe the vinyl down with an essential oil such as tea tree oil or peppermint oil. Next store a cotton ball soaked in an essential oil inside the bench. Cinnamon is one of the longest-lasting fragrances and therefore may be your best bet (provided that you like the smell of cinnamon). If you are storing fabrics inside the chest you may wan...

The refrigerator is one of the home's highest consumers of energy. Make your fridge and freezer run at their energy-efficient best and prolong their lives by cleaning the condenser once or twice a year so their motors don't have to run as long or often. Purchase approved energy efficient appliances: Once you have "green appliances" use the water and energy-saving settings on the kitchen's refrigerator and dishwasher. Tip: Keep your fridge, but make sure it is not so full that air can't circulate.
Purchase or make your own less toxic, environmentally friendly dish soaps and kitchen cleaners. Many commercial dish soaps and dishwasher detergents are made with non-biodegradable and water-polluting ingredients, such as petroleum and phosphates. To "green up" the kitchen choose a dishw...

QUESTION: I know everyone likes to hold onto their "new car smell" as long as possible, however I just bought new furniture and the "new" smell irritates my sinuses. I always have the windows open all summer, but this is bedroom furniture so I am wondering if there is anything I can do to lessen the smell. Is it the wood, because I love that smell of wood or is it the stain? It is a "wood product". Thanks so much for your wonderful column.
I really enjoy all your tips in the Winnipeg Free Press. Last Sunday "Olof" from Selkirk wrote you about having trouble finding a phosphate-free dishwasher detergent that was environmentally friendly and worked as well as regular commercial types. You gave a good tip about adding borax and baking soda. I would also like to mention a product I have had...

GREAT GRAPE DEBATE: Grape and raisin toxicity is a recently identified phenomenon in dogs. In some, ingesting even small amounts can lead to kidney failure; other dogs seem unaffected, leading some experts to wonder if a genetic propensity is the cause. Either way, better safe than sorry: Take grapes and raisins off your dog's snack menu.
OUT, OUT, DANGED COLLAR: All flea and tick products are not created equal. Cats have exquisitely sensitive metabolisms, and products formulated for dogs may be toxic to them. Make sure any brand of collar or preventive is approved for use on cats.
SCAT, CAT!: You can harness a cat's exquisite sensitivity to certain compounds to keep it away from off-limit areas. Most cats dislike citrus, and a few dabs of essential oil of lemon or orange dabbed on upho...

The little fruit is most commonly popped into the mouth and eaten whole so the sweet-and-sour flavours balance each other. They can be added to fruit salads and also mix well with bitter salad greens such as endive and chicory. Kumquats are delicious candied or preserved whole in syrups, and are often used to make brightly coloured jams and marmalades. They can even be pickled. (However used, knead first to free the peel's essential oils.)

In fact, Health Canada has issued more cautions on botanicals than DEET, [Muhammad Morshed] says. Undiluted essential oils, for instance, can irritate skin. Lemon eucalyptus oil contains an ingredient that provides up to two hours protection from mosquito bites, but Health Canada recommends it not be used on children under three years old. Citronella and lavender offer 30 minutes to two hours of protection, but Health Canada wants more safety data.
If it's action you want, DEET wins, hands down. DEET repels mosquitoes, ticks, and most other bugs when applied to skin or clothing. Thirty per cent concentrations of DEET provide six hours of protection.
