There are more than 20 shipwrecks in Fathom Five, which makes it one of the best places to scuba dive in Canada," said Ethan Meleg, the park's outreach co-ordinator.
Canada's only other national marine conservation area is Saguenay St. Lawrence in Quebec with a diversity of marine life such as whales, seals, plants and birds. The park covers a section of the St. Lawrence estuary and the Saguenay fjord, one of the longest fjords in the world, and is composed entirely of water.
"National marine conservation areas tell the stories of Canada's diverse seascapes," said Anthony Theriault, Parks Canada spokesman. "Canada is truly a maritime nation with a rich marine heritage.

The [Celest]ún beach stretches as far as the eye can see with almost no development. There are a few modest hotels, residences, restaurants, one pier, a lighthouse and a dozen fishing boats. The town has three or four good restaurants and virtually no nightlife or shopping. The sand, coarse and strewn with shells, is best navigated with sandals. The Gulf of Mexico water is clean, calm and safe for swimming, and cool afternoon and evening breezes are common. A key Celestún attraction is touring the adjoining estuary known as the Ria Celestún Biosphere by fishing boat, where you'll see dozens (or thousands) of migrating flamingos (depending on the season), hundreds of other birds, possibly a crocodile that lives under the bridge and a petrified forest. A 2.5-hour tour with guide costs a...

Skimmers have been brought in to clean up that slick," said Dan Bate, Department of Fisheries and Oceans spokesman. "Right now there's also a kilometre-long area of affected shoreline, which does include the marsh area, the estuary.
"I can tell you right now this is not going to go away and be cleaned up any time soon. We're going to be dealing with this damage for months if not years," says [Edith Tobe]. "The only positive thing I have to say is thank God it wasn't two months ago when the water fowl were nesting -- it's completely covered all over their nesting grounds."
